Congratulations! I'd recommend going no heavier than 42-43lbs with that bow or it will become a frustration to shoot. You will not want to use a fixed crawl with a short recurve like that unless its a tiny crawl (think less than 1/4" down the string). This is one of the reasons I often recommend...
But wait! What if even a quarter of those poor saps from #3 had the same realization and moved on to step 4? Now you're extra screwed. See what I just did there? :D
Go find actual elk. Kill them. That's the only right answer here.
If you are in San Antonio, do yourself a favor and make it to some of the Traditional Bowhunters of Texas shoots (there's one in Dallas in two weekends at the Cowtown Archery club, and if you want to come to that I'll loan you a bow to shoot for the day). Show up, ask guys to try out their bows...
Me personally, I can't wait to be a grumpy old codger. Till then I'll get my kicks by requesting darn tough socks for Christmas and tucking in my tshirts just to piss the wife off.
Good to hear from you Shines! Been a while. I don't think the unlimited units are gonna be in the cards for a while. Thankfully, not due to my health this time. Something to do with a miniature version of me on the way... yada, yada, yada. @wllm would turn it into an epic thread, I'm sure.
Hah! Peasant! We the almighty wabbit slayer, are not friends with anyone who cannot slay small game on their own. Get good, scrub! (I kid, I kid!)
Jokes aside, the best trad advice I can give you is to buy the Solid Archery Mechanics online course from The Push. It's gold, man! Well worth the $200!
It cracks me up how pessimistic some guys are about handguns. If you just go searching you will find an awful lot of stories of pistols stopping bears (and the failures tend to be situations where no shots were actually fired). Pistols chambered in the anemic 9mm or .41 mag or .357 even...

Aclima Woolnet base layers (slightly cheating, it's like $170 for the top and bottoms, which is less than $100 per piece!)
Kuiu Peloton 200 quarter zip hoodie
Squirrel is excellent... but if I'm hunting grouse, I'm also hunting mule deer or elk. And THAT makes the grouse taste better than squirrel just by virtue of the context.
Thanks! I agree. And when I did live near grouse I was such a lousy shot with a bow I usually reached for a sidearm instead 🤦♂️. Didn't want to break my arrows.
Yes that is a Toelke. That's their 64" SS recurve.
And don't be ridiculous! You coud definitely do better than this with a .22! The tree top shots alone would make it much more effective.
I probably average 4-5 shots per kill on rabbits and squirrels and that's when I keep my shots under ten...
