Hey @theat, appreciate the insight, thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, my buddy has an Army course scheduled that ends in early-mid May, so we're kind of locked in on third week of May likely being the earliest we can get out there. I think we're going to be prepared to hunt both ways you...
Yeah, that's how it was for us in Idaho in 2019. The access throughout most of the unit was fairly good in areas where the sun hit every day. But once you got back into the timber or the deeper canyons, the north-facing slopes still had a good amount of snow pack.
Yup, copy all. Saw the story and video @Gerald Martin posted in another thread; and a family friend is a forester out east near Miles City and he said his colleagues out west told him the same thing. Make lots of noise, carry spray, and be on our toes. Thanks, Marv!
Hey all -
East Coaster here with some previous experience in Colorado and the Idaho Panhandle. Looking for some comments/feedback on a spring bear hunt in the Cabinets / Purcell Mtns region. Particularly interested in info on snow pack/snow line and access. We’re looking to do a spring bear...
I have a Rem 7600 in 35 Whelen and it’s a really great gun. Got it in 2003ish when Rem did a limited run. I typically use it as a brush gun for bear season. But also carry it when I’m in crappy terrain, as I put a synthetic aftermarket stock on it, so it can take a little more punishment than my...
Gerald - dropped you a PM; but don’t know if it went through (just recently hit 10 posts so I don’t know if it may have gotten hung up due to that requirement).
This. I’ve found removing the batteries from all my electronics (RF, scopes, radios) and storing in cool/dry places during the off-season has allowed me to really increase the life of my electronics. Nothing worse than opening up the battery compartment to see leaks/corrosion.
Couple PA bruins.
The half-mount is a 260 lb female that was tooth-aged at 14 years.
The rug is a 230 lb male; can’t remember what the tooth aging put him at, but I want to say he was fairly young, prob 3-5 yrs old.
Agreed on all of this. We treat bear like pork, in terms of getting the animal gutted, skinned, and meat processed. If it’s good and cold (freezing or below) you’ll be fine for a couple days, but I’ve found that bear meat spoils more quickly than venison. Also, for taste, it’s important to get...
Where did you end up going? How did it go? Only ask because I’m considering the Cabinets myself for spring 2021. Would be anxious to hear how it went. Thanks!
I hunted Idaho Unit 1 in 2019. It’s a no bait and no hounds unit. We hunted it for 5 days or so, saw around 5-6 black bears - including two really nice color phase bears - and no grizz. Think ID F&G only estimates there are only circa 30-50 grizz in the entire unit, so the likelihood of crossing...
I’ve hunted Unit 1 (spring 2019) if you’d consider a no bait/no hounds unit. It’s tough hunting and rugged country, but we saw 6 bears in 4 days. Just couldn’t get on them to kill them. Happy to share some lessons learned if you’re interested.
