Looks like the BLM released the final Western Solar Plan at the end of last week. I haven't read through it, but it appears the agency is expanding how much land is available for solar development to ~32 million acres (up from around 22 million in the draft). Open lands are those that are within...
Do you have a good method for picking out a young cow? Is it a size thing or something else? Curious as I've never been able to tell, but my experience is somewhat limited.
That time of year in the CO mountains in can be any sort of weather. I have hunted the units you are talking about a couple of times and one year it didn't get below freezing at night and was in the 60s during the day. The next year it was in the single digits at night and barely hit 40 during...
Seems to be more and more money moving into that area, so business should be looking up. I love it there. Just don't take any jobs on places within any migration corridors!
I'd agree on a family trip to the mountain west to explore and do some scouting! Other than that, I'm a fan of just going for it and seeing where the cards fall. You'll learn a lot and will likely not get anything, but it'll be a heck of an experience. I like the idea of getting a deer tag - you...
I clean my bolt rifles usually once a year and that is max 100 rounds through each of them, usually less. I used to clean after every session, but it just got to be too much and I don't think it was necessary.
Good lookin shootin irons. I recently got a Ridge Carbon Wilderness in 6.5 PRC. Shoots 127 Barnes factory into less than an inch. Was plinking at 600 in less than a box of ammo while breaking it in. Have a AG composites Alpine Hunter stock on order. Has a VX-3HD on it. Really digging the rifle...
Does anyone know if there are any data on wounding loss rates through the years? Wonder if there is any correlation with increases in technology. Are we more effective now because technology is better? Or because tech is better do we think we don't have to practice as much or are more confident...
Likely if you shot at 100 yards you'd be hitting high, perhaps a couple of inches. This is why you are higher still at 200 and maybe zeroed at 300. Your actual 80 yd zero is hard to determine with that group. Did any one brand of ammo shoot consistently. When you lowered your group 7 'inches'...
I wish I took a picture, but I was so frustrated last year that I taped printer paper between ladder rungs and put a target behind it. It was really bush league.
With the threats to hunting growing across the west, how do we as hunters create a comprehensive plan to be proactive about the crusade against hunting? I fully support sending money to CRWM and others who are fighting tooth and nail on the ground. I can't help but think, however, that hunters...
It is always good to shoot your rifle when you get to your destination especially if it is a long journey or your gun is in a plane. The difference in elevation within 300 yards is negligible - maybe an inch with your 30-06. Once you starting getting out past 500 yards or so you may start...
The only one worth anything anymore is FedEx. UPS is alright and the postal service is just sad. I remember shipping some ammo a couple years ago and I went to three UPS stores before I finally found someone who had a clue.
Sounds like it was too dangerous to remove the entire carcass but they could get the head and claws. I don't see the issue with leaving the carcass in the river. Should be consumed in short order I'd guess.
If you are going to hang a bear bag, be sure to do it so that it is effective. I've seen so many (mine included) hangs that wouldn't have stopped a bear if it had no legs. In some areas it is also difficult to find trees that are appropriate. A lot of southern Wyoming burned a few years ago, so...
I would bring the UTV. There are a lot of roads in that country and it is pretty remote, so good to at least have another vehicle. I'd bring extra gas too because it can be a long drive to get back to town. It is a really cool area and you guys should have some fun looking elk!
