Iowa SF255 NR tags going to outfitters.

Do I need to put a Paul Harrell style Shatneresque pause disclaimer in my tag line?

Butt ugly with an identity crisis

I assumed these are just a semi-natural response to active (or anticipated) semi-auto and mag capacity bans.

    BOSS 20 gauge 2 3/4" #5 for ducks

Been shooting some vintage guns the last 3 seasons, and have shot boss 2 3/4 #5s out of 12 and 20s when cross over with waterfowl is possible. Jump shot a few ducks. I’ve killed quite a few pheasants, grouse, huns, and quail. Even the plated bismuth fractures some. I’ve never tried the...

Iowa SF255 NR tags going to outfitters.

Bump. There's a pretty good constituency of Iowans here. Anecdotally, it seems like there is ever increasing friction between outfitters and local resident agricultural interests (at least in SE IA). Maybe an alliance with those interests or an appeal to those folks may help address this.

    Tailgate Pics

My grandfather’s. Made in 1938. Poly choke is 60’s vintage I believe. The compensator is kind of ear splitting. Especially in rimrock.

    Pheasant & Chukar Recipes

Chicken pot pie soup Slow cooked and shredded pheasant legs/thighs and subbed them in for the breast in this recipe. Added rolled and cut canned biscuits in as dumplings too. One of the best things I’ve had in a while.

Max price point for a chukar gun/boulder shank?

I love my newer Franchi affinity 20 ga. It’s taken a beating over the last 6 months.

    Crops and their Contents

Early to mid-season blues (dusky) are the most intriguing to me. Seeing the variety in early season birds sometimes within even the same brood is eye opening.

    2023-2024 Chukar Adventures

Got out for the first time in a couple weeks. My (almost) 2 year old dog has made huge progress. He’s had zero chill, ripping bird etc. Today he held steady on 5 coveys (huns and chukar). Pointing way out on wild running birds and creeping in to relocate them etc. It takes a lot of patience...

    What are you currently reading?

The Indifferent Stars Above. I got interested in some more details about the Donner Party and this one came highly recommended by a few people. Also, learned about Margaret Reed’s Xmas meal. Makes you really appreciate what you have, and marvel at humanities capacity for discipline and...

Harvesting wild game materials for fly tying?

Pheasant, whitetail, in-law’s feral peacock. I have a bunch of various wet flies, nymphs, and a couple dries but haven’t taken pictures apparently.

Harvesting wild game materials for fly tying?

I know a guy who used to use his beagles tail hair. Time for that lab to pony up some tail hair

    Waste of Game

Essentially helped family friends do something similar once. Had a young hunter describe basically walking right up to a buck and shooting it. Buck clearly didn’t seem to be aware of its surroundings and its body condition was poor. Whole thing, head and all was gotten rid of. I’ve wondered...

Barred Owls Tear Up Bird Dogs?

I called a couple in as a kid. This is such an off the wall species I didn’t even consider calling them in. I might be interested in trying one if the situation was right. If it’s legal, tying some flies etc with one could be interesting too.

Barred Owls Tear Up Bird Dogs?

Proposed open season on barred owls. Would you hunt them? How would you go about it?

    Fear of Lost Keys

Went to pheasant hunt several hours from home. 20 minutes in I realized I had a hole in my right front pocket. I now stash keys on the vehicle.
