Fantastic news!!! At long last, and not enough, but a real start.
From The Wildlife Society, "The Bureau of Land Management is pledging to prioritize the restoration and conservation of wildlife on public lands. Under a new instruction memorandum, state BLM offices will be...
Yes, I have thought along the same lines for years. My father worked for Swift meats for 30 years and during that time I learned plenty about the meat business. I became concerned at a young age about the hormones given to animals when they're in the feed lot, and tenderizers injected into an...
Rose, Thank you for the boost! I'm happy to have inspired you, as I would like to see more women in the backcountry having the time of their lives. Once the initial fear goes away, it's exhilarating to be reliant on only your own strength and intuition. Do it! See you in the mountains.
This is entertaining AF. I get to listen in on what men actually say when they think there are no women around. HW: Maybe we could go over to the huntresses' section and have our own fun...
Hey Rose and HW: Thank you for your thoughts! My internal frame Gregory has plenty of ways to secure the load, as that is also important for all the stuff one carries when backpacking. As to whether a quarter elk will fit, (and obviously I haven't shot an elk yet) I had planned on boning out...
Hey all: Appreciate this discussion on packs that fit a woman's frame. I have had many different backpacking packs over the years, and find that some brands fit me better than others. My Gregory pack fits me well, and I chafe at the high price of a hunting-specific pack. However, I see the...
I worked on a survey crew carrying a 15' metal rod, or a bundle of pin flags and often we got caught in lighting storms. That rod will buzzz, or your hair will stand straight up before a strike. So I did some research. If caught in the mountains in a lightning storm, do not get into a drainage...
I agree. The desert is gorgeous as well with hidden gems everywhere, and some of it deserves wilderness designation. More importantly for ungulates, the desert provides winter habitat that is just as essential as the mountainous summer habitat. The mountains and prairies are biologically...
"with the drought, even the crappy habitat is in poorer shape." Thank you DrH for reminding folks about this essential element. Some of us do give a damn about the animals and work tirelessly to protect them and their habitats.
The herds aren't doing great because the range isn't doing great. I'm surprised that the drought hasn't been mentioned in this thread; it's the reason for the reduction in the number of tags available. Projections are that the drought will continue and become even more severe. Habitat matters.
Getting a late start this year, but here is what it will look like in about a month. We have a 68-day growing season at 7,100' and it can frost at any time during the summer. I do a lot of root vegetables and frost-resistant stuff like peas, raspberries, chokecherries. The summer squash gets...
