I'm a fan of the .308. But you know that if you ask 10 gun guys what is the best caliber for this or that, you may get 10 different answers and none of them are wrong.
The Taking of K-129: How the CIA Used Howard Hughes To Steal A Russian Sub in the Most Daring Covert Operation in History, by Josh Dean. The subtitle pretty much sums it up. I found it fascinating.
That has been my experience with trail runners when going off-trail here in SW Montana as well. The thorns find their way through the lightweight construction and even through the thinner soles. And it only takes one thorn breaking through to bring my progress to an immediate stop.
I know a guy who got some good-natured ribbing from his buddies when he first started driving his old Outback to the trailheads. The first time he drove out with a nice 6X6 bull strapped to the roof, the ribbing stopped. It happened to be the vehicle he had, so he made it work.
The 30-30 is probably fine for killing deer in timber. If it wasn't, it would have faded into obsolescence years ago and the ammo would be hard to find. On the contrary, I believe it's still one of the most common deer calibers around and I've never seen an ammo retailer that didn't have a box...
Additionally, Beartooth Publishing, which I believe is based on Bozeman, makes some very good recreational maps. I think they produce one for the Bozeman/Big Sky/West Yellowstone area. I don't venture over that way too often, but I've used my BP map of the Tobacco Roots a lot. They do a...
I'm reluctant to proclaim any caliber as the "best" since I'll never be able to shoot them all in the variety of different conditions, but I don't think I could have chosen a better caliber for my son's first "all-around" western hunting rifle. With its mild recoil, he has enjoyed shooting it...
But at least I can spend more time in the field this fall since there's no point watching college football.
I will say the worst part of hunting season is having to wear orange. ;) By the way, Easley, I'm from Anderson originally.
Greetings from SW Montana. I'm new to this forum, but not to hunting - well, I didn't think I was new to hunting until I moved out here (fulfilling a dream) a few years ago. I've shot a lot of deer in South Carolina, Georgia, and West Virginia, but it's a whole different ballgame out here. My...
Another vote for the 7mm-08. I bought an inexpensive Savage Axis II in that caliber for my 12 year old son last summer. Last fall, he shot his first deer with it at 210 yards from a kneeling position after a long hike over rough terrain. He probably could have shot any caliber at that deer...
