Appreciate the comments, these ribs really exceeded all our expectations. One additional by-product is the water-turned-reduced elk broth. It is silky, and very good. I put three pints up in the freezer for making wild mushroom risotto with later this summer.
I saved as much of the rib cages off my elk as possible, as they had a fair bit of meat left on them, and I was trucking out - not packing out. I read an article about a family that had an elk rib BBQ every year, so I tried their method: simmer the ribs in water for a couple hours to break...
If you are heistant about the app, dont be. I have used it extensively in AL as I am surrounded by LOTS of public land divided between varying agenices (TVA, USFS, WMA, etc) and it has helped me find access points, kept me within boundaries and let me do lots of research while in endless...
JR - What is the next step here? Is there a vote pending in the House on this, or does the amendment go to conference? I guess I am asking what we can do next from coordinated response standpoint in contacting our representatives regarding this issue.
Jeff
100% agree on roosting them the evening before, but on public land in AL, you have to keep the shock calls in your pocket or you will never see a gobbler. Calling softly and less often here is generally what wins the day, and many times they will come in silent. Be patient and dont give up on...
Went out for the last day of small game hunting today, and came up with a big nada. It was cold, there was still lots of snow on the ground, and a bit windy so that likely had something to do with the outcome -this is Alabama after all, snow shuts everything here down. No rabbit stew for us...
In the first pattern photo, I was holding the bead dead center of the aiming circle, and you can see most of the pellets ended up in the body - especially for the XR. In the second round of shots I was holding the bead dead on the top of the head, and the pattern turned out much better.
With the one day of spring like weather we have had in North AL this month and deer season over, my turkey hunting juices are flowing pretty hard right now. I have not patterned my gun in a few years, so I decided to grab some targets and two loads to see how things stand.
Gun: Remington...
This is part of our continuous information absorbtion and learning cycle now. I enjoy these as on my 3+ hour commutes each month, the radio gets old, and talk radio is un-listenable now. I like to plug in and get something of vaule out of that time, rather than mind numbing windshield time...
I read a part of a pretty good study recently that intimated the TN herd is not growing as fast at the KY herd did due to the larger number of black bears in the TN reintroduction region. I did see, however, that KY is starting to increase the black bear population and some predictions say that...
Appreciate the well wishes from all of you. I am truely blessed to have had this opportunity - especially drawing an out of state tag on the first application.
I just about have he all processed, and took a break to cook up a very nice top round steak for lunch yesterday. It doesnt get any...
I was lucky enough to draw a KY cow elk tag for the first rifle season this year. This is my story of the hunt.
This started in March of 2014 when I was at Fort Knox for Army Reserve Training. I had noticed several large whitetail deer on the range complex, and was looking on the post...
Fort Hunter Liggett in the California Central Coast. I have seen deer, elk, turkey, hogs and lots of other things roaming around. Spent a lot of time there training the last two years, and it is on my future hunt list now.
Interesting times with the KY elk hunt so far. I drew the Hazard LEA, which has three public hunting areas in it, the largest being the ICG Hunting Access area. I think this is some reclaimed coal land, and was my primary target area; also the largest block of public land in the LEA.
I...
I was extremely fortunate, as it was my first time putting in the draw! I was riding in the back of a HWMMV coming back from Fort Knox and just happened to find a reference to the draw on their range site, and dropped the application right then.
This will be a DIY hunt, and I drew the...
Greetings from Huntsville, AL. I have been drawn to the site as I was lucky enough to draw a KY elk tag this year (cow - rifle- first week) and have no elk experience at all. I have been on a massive information binge over the last several months, and my education continues.
I look forward...
