    Elk results tomorrow for WY

39 For me! My first Wyoming elk tag after years of applying.

Make MT Sheep/Goat Once in a Lifetime?

If you assume that the applicant pool is constant at 150,000, 1350 tags are being issued a year and an average hunter might apply for 30 years, 40,500 people will have been removed from that pool by the rule and draw odds at the end increase by 27% in the final year against the first year and...

Make MT Sheep/Goat Once in a Lifetime?

It would at least kick a few old guys who loaded the game in their favor decades ago out for their 2nd or 3rd round of sheep hunting. When you have tags whose draw odds are almost all under 1%,often orders of magnitude worse, and the typical hunter might only have 30-40 years of being...

Make MT Sheep/Goat Once in a Lifetime?

I wish all lower 48 sheep tags were consolidated so that a punched sheep tag in any lower 48 state was OIL. As an NR, I think you could start effecting the odds quite a bit more if you starting knocking guys out of applying in every sheep state every year once they are drawn.

    Rain Gear

I think you have to consider what you are willing to pack in a rain jacket should you go the technical goretex (or similar route). The 3+ layer jackets are going to weigh 25-30 oz and will fill up most of a gallon ziplock bag when packed. The lighter jackets are going to be in the 10-12 oz...

    Hunter numbers and management funding

From Outdoor Life Earlier this year. Alabama is an outlier in hunting participation drops. https://www.outdoorlife.com/why-we-are-losing-hunters-and-how-to-fix-it#page-6 The issues with hunter participation are fairly straight forward. Our population is increasingly urban and access has...

    Binoculars you would swear by

The 8x32 Swarovski EL has the largest FOV of any Swarovski binocular at 425' @ 100 yards where the 8.5 x 42 is 399' and the 10x42 are 336' FOV. If you stick to 8x32/30 the exit pupil is 3.75mm/4.0mm whereas 10x42 is 4.2 mm so there isn't a lot of difference in light transmission since both the...

Big Dreams on a College Budget

I've elk hunted out of a Subaru Impreza. If you can throw a mountain bike in you can go anywhere a 4x4 truck or side by side might go with a little effort. In most cases its only the last sections of road that get dicey, its not like you have to park 20 miles away. Renting is pretty cost...

    Outdoorsman Packs

My biggest complaint with their packs is that you don't get a load shelf except on their biggest pack. I will also always question whether external frame packs have much utility anymore beyond niche settings. I do know that they have a pretty good following with guides packing moose quarters...

    Magnetospeed

I like my Magneto speed because I'm not always messing with a chrono on a tripod during cease fires, but it does throw off my POI consistently high of all things. If i'm at a busy rifle range I would consider it to be a courtesy to the other shooters and the RO because the setup is so much...

Decline In Hunters Threatens How U.S. Pays For Conservation (NPR)

Increasing urbanization is a big problem for hunting. I can't tell you how much different it is when you live in major metro area and the closest realistic hunting opportunities are 2 hours drive away. Instantly the effort required to hunt from an urban area rules out casual hunting. I've...

    Range Finder + Spotter necessary?

A rangefinder is a tool I wouldn't antelope without. Making long shots is one of the more difficult aspects of antelope hunting and accurate ranging is very key and there are great options for $350 or less. It is also key for planning stalks in what often looks like featureless country...

    Best Pronghorn pack?

For me its a day pack capacity with a load cell. I would consider the Mystery Ranch Popup 18/28 to be nearly perfect antelope packs. The Kuiu Icon Pro 1850 and Exo 2000 would also be great options.

Those of you who shoot Barnes bullets...

I don't really have an opinion on how often i clean but the impact velocity I would say that 2000 FPS is probably the safe minimum. Some expansion will occur down to 1800 fps, but not a ton. A little more velocity and a lighter bullet is typical for Barnes. They need the speed to open up and...

Do you use a pack frame for turkey hunting?

I've always used turkey vests, but also always recognized that they were all poorly designed from a weight bearing capacity. Last year I was on my first western turkey hunt after years in the Midwest and myself and my friend ended up taking 2 toms a few miles into a burn full of ridges and...

Danny Davis's Gun Tax and the The Pittman-Robertson Act

Danny Davis is my Rep. I'm not sure if there has ever been a general election challenger from the right side of the aisle so his battles will always be limited to primaries. In Illinois you have establishment Democrats and the Progressive Wing that come to blows from time to time. He is an...

    Gloves

Mechanix Impact Leather are my pronghorn stalking gloves of choice and any of the Sitka pants with integrated knee pads are the best. Rookie mistakes from my first antelope trip involve my wife pulling nearly 20 needles out of my shin after I got home and my buddy setting up a thermarest on a...

Building pts vs saving for hunts

Lets say a guided sheep hunt cost $20,000. A lower 48 sheep tag if drawn is $1-3k. Nonresident sheep odds are nearly all sub 1% draw odds and most are way worse. For instance in MT I think you needed 10 or more points to even get a unit to 1% draw odds on gohunt. Most sheep applications at...

    6mm, 6.5mm's

Pretty much this. The problem with factory .243 is that you get a 1-10" or 1-9.12" twist rate so you are limited to reliably stabilizing something like a 90-95 gr VLD type bullet or a 100 grain round nose. If you want to play with cool bullet weights in 6mm or 6.5mm you need a 1-8 or faster...

    Which broadhead for turkeys?

NAP gobbler getter which has a blunt tip and a 1.5" 3 blade cutting diameter or just the biggest blade rage broadhead you can find.
