Compared to losing a dog, conibear traps are pretty cheap. Buying a 220 to keep on hand to practice with a few times before each season would be money well spent, in my opinion. Then keep a cable cutter and rope with you at all times and you should be in pretty good shape.
I hear you. Every time I hear whining about wolves, see a Cheeser thread, or listen to people spout off about “SSS” it makes me more content with just leaving them alone.
Had a couple days off for Thanksgiving and sure enjoyed it. Pretty slow trapping but I picked up a nice muskrat yesterday.
And another muskrat and a nice mink today.
I also started working on sewing up my first fur garment, a pair of mittens for the kids. I’m mostly done. I just have to...
I set traps at my neighbors place today. The main goal is to keep the otters from cleaning out his pond, but he also doesn’t like the beavers chewing down his oaks. I set an old beaver lodge on his pond where I know the otters will visit but, while doing so, I noticed some new beavers moved in...
I think it’s time for the annual trapping thread!
I got a call from a farmer a couple weeks ago that needed help with some beavers. I finally found time to set some traps last week on Friday and on Saturday my son and my nephew came along to help me do the first check.
Sunday I did another...
Turned an old tool trailer into a walk-in cooler using the Coolbot. It works awesome. Never had a problem keeping it down around 35 degrees. I put 4” of foam insulation on the walls and then had someone spray-foam the floor, ceiling, and a thin coat on the walls to seal them up. I can’t remember...
Years back when I was a teenager my mom got scabies from a kid in her classroom. Everyone in our house had to treat themselves as a precaution. They gave us an ointment we had to rub over our entire bodies. I looked at the active ingredient and it was permethrin. I figure if it was safe enough...
Our coon numbers seem down a bit in my area of southern MN, as well. I’ve seen more young turkeys and pheasants than I can ever remember. I still plan on trapping as many coons as I can this fall and winter as long as I can find the time.
Forget the technical rain gear for fishing and get yourself some Helly Hansen Impertech stuff. Save the Stone Glacier for your hunting trips. You won’t win any fashion shows, but it doesn’t matter how hard or long it rains, you’ll be dry. You can thank me when you get back from your trip.
That makes a decade of Unsuccessfuls for me. Hoping my elk odds for a late hunt approach 10% in another decade. I have no illusions of ever drawing anything else, but it’s fun to dream.
