Day 1:
The plan for this morning was to find the deer Ryan chased the day yesterday.
We found the bigger buck almost immediately.
He was pestering one doe pretty hard and pushed her away from the rest of the deer before bedding down.
Ryan and I looped around to try to stalk them while...
Day Zero:
I got into camp midday and took a 3hr long nap before going on a short hike.
It was COLD with a steady 15-20mph wind out of the north. Not very enjoyable at all, but the javelina were out in full force. I saw 5 groups of them sunning themselves on the protected, south-facing slopes...
Sorry for the radio silence over the last few days. The cell service just wasn't reliable enough to deal with the frustrations of uploading photos and stories. I will edit the photos and my journal entries from the week and get them posted once I get done with this drive home.
The trip was a...

I have never really considered myself to be a normal person, and I do not aspire to live a normal life. Some of my co-workers use to call me...
I was never able to good velocities in my 7rm's with RL22. I've had much better results with imr7977 which is available almost anywhere.
If you want to get the best velocities, you should try RL26, retumbo, or 8133. The load I used this year was with RL26 and it's pushing 180vld's @ 2950fps...
It was a lot of fun. I think my wife might have finally realized a practical reason to improve her cardio. ;) My sister runs half marathons and marathons regularly, so she wasn't doing too bad. They both struggled with the uneven and rocky terrain. It's too bad that the hunting pressure was so...
It's been way too long since I've been in the hills and life's been much busier than I prefer, but I was able to get out and look for some elk today with my wife and sister who's visiting.
The plan was to drive around, cover as much ground as possible, check for fresh tracks, and hopefully...
I finally found myself sitting down with nothing to do that can't be done tomorrow....
--------
I almost didn't hunt Thanksgiving afternoon. We were socializing, telling old stories I've heard far too many times to still be as funny as they are, and eating all of the foods. But the weather...
Thanks Ben! It's really weird to see my face in a magazine.
It's in the Nov/Dec issue of Eastman's Bowhunting Journal. The full, unabbreviated version is still in last year's thread on here.
There's lots to be thankful for today. Being home with family is at the top of the list, and this guy is just a little icing on the cake.
I'll write up the story sometime soon, but for now I'm just going to celebrate with my uncles and cousins.
No deer yet, but.... at least it's really cold?
The only deer we've seen were on the neighbor's property, but we're hopeful they'll eventually cross the fence.
Today marks the first day I've hunted in the Wisconsin him deer season since I left home over 9 years ago. I decided I needed to get home to see the family and do a little hunting while I had the chance.
I'm sitting with my cousin who wasn't even close to being old enough to hunt when I left...
Thanks. So far the move is going about as good as it can. I mean... Our house was only on the market for 48 hours. Haha
I have a lot of work to do to even be half of what BigFin is.... I have to retire from the military first, and that's over a decade away! Lots can happen between now and then...
Thanks! I'm really looking forward to the elk hunt with my wife. We suddenly have a lot more free time in our schedule since we accepted an offer on the house. We are also trading a bunch of meat of meat in return for some childcare. That'll help us be a lot more effective.
It was a blast. I...
What a crazy string of events that have happened in my life over the last few days. In the midst of a PCS, accepting an offer on our house, shooting a great buck, and traveling home for the holidays, I get this surprise in the mail...
Seeing something I wrote put into print is a lifelong...
Well... We got our house on the market yesterday so I was able to sneak away to chase some deer today.
I went to the same spot I went last week to see if I could turn up the same buck. This time a buddy would be tagging along to spot and Per usual, we saw a lot of does everywhere we looked...
It is. This is our 4th move in 7 years, so we kinda have a system down. But I am very much looking forward to moving for the last time and being able to settle into a community. It's crazy to think I'll most likely have 3-4 more moves before I separate from the military.
That's probably the route i'm going to take. I have all of my other misc. skulls and deer euros in boxes with packing paper and extra clothes in there to take up the space. All of my shoulder mounts are going to be screwed onto plywood which will then be fastened to the floor of a uhaul trailer...
Someone's trying to be a big help by moving the sheds back and forth to the most inconvenient spots in the house...
Seriously though... Moving elk heads is a nightmare.
Anybody got any tips and tricks on how to move elk euro mounts without breaking them?
