    Back Pack Meals (Military MREs)

I've eaten enough MREs to know that I'd rather eat shards of glass before I'd spend my own money on MREs and eat them without being forced to do so. Hard pass for this guy.

    Average Joe's 2019

I get lucky every now and then. 🙃 I'm normally around an inch for every ten yards, but sometimes they just fall in there real nice and neat.

More than what I tell my wife. 😅 Seriously though, I budget for 2 dozen arrows a year. I won't break that many this year because I haven't shot for 8 months, but I expect to lose a dozen-ish by the time hunting season is over. I have all my food organized and ready to go. 16 days worth of...

    Average Joe's 2019

I'm heading up to Oregon Friday night after the family and I get back from a quick vacation. After the long drive, I'll have 4 or 5 days to hunt before I have to come back to NM to do some scouting and hunt here. I'm not even close to packed or anything, but at least my bow is shooting good...

    Average Joe's 2019

I got out and did some fishing with a few guys from work. As expected, the lake was a clown show, but we still managed to catch a couple dozen 1-2lb smallmouths, a handful of largemouths and one decent fish. We ended up spending about 11 hours on the lake and we were pretty dead by the end...

Haha. I don't know if I'm prepared. I don't have any food or gear set aside for the upcoming hunts. I've been procrastinating on the preparation front. I'll probably shop for food tomorrow and get my gear together 45 minutes before I leave. I look at it this way, as long as I have my weapon...

    Average Joe's 2019

Got out and shot my bow yesterday. Turns out the bow still works and the indian hasn't forgotten how to shoot after an 8 month sabbatical. I was also able to test out a few different vane configurations, but I've decided the 6 fletch 2.25" vanetec shield cut configuration is the best. Other...

Like I said, it's good to be back. 🥰 Anyone who's been away from home for a while can fully appreciate everything within that photo. 🤣

    Best paper map to order??

Mytopo.com is great for printing a larger map. That said, I normally use caltopo.com and print on write-in-the rain paper or I'll laminate regular printer paper. Usually only takes 4-6 sheets of paper to cover the entire unit I plan to hunt if I print at 1:50k.

    First time loading Nosler Partitions

I'm honestly not sure why you don't feel confident with the 150SST. Bear and deer are not tough animals, and the 270 isn't pushing the bullet fast enough for a total failure (unless you get a sub 100yd shot). ALso, the 150SST has good sectional density, so it can handle loosing a few grains off...

    Average Joe's 2019

The Oregon trip will be a nice opportunity to spend some time by myself. Long drives are great for knocking out a couple audiobooks, and there's nothing better for my mental resiliency than waking up in the mountains before the sunrise, slipping out of my sleeping bag, starting my coffee, and...

    Average Joe's 2019

I have a little more fidelity on when I'll be making it home. If everything stays on track I'll be able to sneak an Oregon elk hunt into early Sep. (I need some redemption from last season) I'm still waiting on the 2nd Idaho draws to be released to make my final decision, but no matter what...

Why my pack sucks: Kifaru, Stone Glacier, Exo, Seek, Mystery Ranch, Kuiu, etc.

My current pack is a Kifaru Fulcrum w/26" tactical frame - 2 seasons, packed out 5 elk/1 moose/1 pronghorn/8 deer/2 javelina Cons- heavy, HUGE(if you're not into that kind of thing), and expensive. Mystery Ranch Crew Cab - 5 seasons, packed out 5 elk and 15 deer Cons- the frame is too short to...

    Powder for 7mm mag

RL23 is the best I've seen with 140gr bullets. IMR 7977 is very good with 160-168gr bullets in all of the rifles I've loaded for. It's my go-to powder if others aren't showing promise. The only downside of 7977 is lower velocity compared to RL26 and retumbo. H1000 is also great for this class...

    Average Joe's 2019

Don't worry guys.... I'm still alive, just been preoccupied with a work trip to the other side of the world. Between moving in January, numerous house upgrade projects, and spending time with the family before this trip, I have spent exactly zero days in the woods this year. Heck... the last...

    Best .308 parent case cartridge

If we're taking purely ballistics, the 25 Souper improved with 131 blackjack ACE's is probably the best performing 308 based cartridge.

    .257 Wby Mag?

In my opinion, 257wby is the ideal medium game hunting cartridge. Elk, moose, barbary sheep, deer, pigs, and many others have fallen like the lights were shut off by my cheap but trusty 257wby vanguard. I've killed dozens of critters with the old barrel and it's time for a new one. As soon as I...

Black Gold sight - stock mount or dovetail?

Dovetail for sure. The biggest reason is the ability to quickly remove the sight to protect it during transport.

    Pressure cooking?

My wife bought an InstaPot despite my strong prejudice against the "fad" and I was not happy about it... Now I'm mad about how often I'm using the dang thing, but mostly how often my wife reminds me how much I "hated" them. The InstaPot is extremely easy and has is more functional than a dutch...
