I absolutely love hunting by myself, but packing an elk out solo pushes a little too close to the miserable category. It's so good to have friends!
I feel bad for making these guys hike up to this spot, but I couldn't be more grateful for their help. The fact that they dropped everything...
Knowing the shot was perfect and the bull would die, I hoped he would run a few hundred yards and get as close to the bottom of the mountain as possible to make the pack out a little less difficult... But he only went about 60 yards before falling over.
With all of the snow on the top of the mountain, my assumption was that the bulls would be feeding lower than they had been. So instead of waking up at 0330 and hiking to the top of the mountain like I had been, I decided to sleep in a little and get up to a low saddle that had a good view of a...
The big storm started Wednesday with a bunch of rain and slush falling from the sky. I hiked around all day and it was miserable. I only saw 2 elk in the morning and assumed they were hunkered down waiting for the snow to hit. I decided to sleep in Thursday morning assuming the elk would be...
Well, the last few days were all together uneventful. I spent the last 2 days mostly scouting the rest of the roads and access points around the base of the mountain. I saw 3 decent bulls first thing in the morning Tuesday, and they headed to the same place the other bulls went Monday. So I'm...
Found a dinosaur toof.
Also jumped 5 small bulls on top of the mountain. Looked like the herd I saw yesterday morning. No shortage of bulls up here. Just need to get a shot off.
Didn't have any close encounters last night. I did find another herd of bulls in a canyon adjacent to the one I glassed yesterday morning. The first batch of elk to come out were all smaller than I'm willing to hike for.
I did see a big bull at last light. I wasn't able to get a pic of him...
Glassed up a few bulls this morning. None of them were quite what I'm looking for, so I'm gonna hike to the other side of the mountain to see what I can see.
Found a decent starting point today.
I spent most of the day driving around, checking roads and water tanks. I spent the evening near water and glassing a mountain while looking directly into the setting sun (obviously not effectively.)
Despite being blinded by the sun, about 45 minutes...
I had a few too many items on my to-do list this weekend to get away to Oklahoma for some hunting. But Alan and I were able to get to the lake with my little guy.
Really slow day of fishing, but we managed to get a couple smiles out of the little fella.
Well... The sun has set for the last time on this short Barbary hunt. Didn't see any big rams tonight. I really wish I had gotten pics of the one I missed yesterday. He was a dandy. I got hit with a quick but powerful monsoon rain just as I was getting setup to shoot. The wind was howling, I...
