Paid $13k for a once-in-a-lifetime trip for elk, mule deer, and antelope this past October in CO. Was supposed to go to a long distance shooting range (MO) to shoot for the day to make sure everything was good to go. Arrived there and was told it was closed for a group event. After much...
I bought a Savage 110 High Country in .300 Win Mag this past March with a VX-5HD scope and hunted with it 2nd season in CO for mule deer, antelope, and elk. This thing weighs a ton and the Leupold carbon fiber tripod and Triclawps was having a hard time keeping it steady. I'm changing to a...
Thank you!! Yes, it was crazy how easily my guides could pick out animals. We'd be driving along and they'd come to a screeching halt after seeing something out of the corner of their eye!!!!!! By the end, I was able to find pretty close to the same number of animals while glassing. I'm...
Thank you! Yes, mostly. It was definitely a different situation hunting unpressured private land vs. public like I normally do. This being said, I learned a TON! Unfortunately, some were painful experiences, like missing twice when a bull was at 90 yards b/c of my turret being set for 600+...
Thanks!! I’m pretty happy with him. He was 410 yards when I shot him. I had another chance at a B&C buck, but the turret on my scope was jacked up and I shot over his back.
Thanks!! Here's the overview post I just wrote in another thread https://www.hunttalk.com/threads/educating-adult-onset-hunter.298227/post-3096171
Bottom line is 2 out of 3 tags filled, but came really close on the elk tag.
I ended up having a great experience and did learn a lot! As others said, hunting private is WAY different than public. We saw elk every day and it was nice knowing if you bedded one, some other hunter wasn't going to bust them out of the area. It was also nice to be able to go back to camp...
After using it on my CO trip, I say stay away from them if hunting with a scope you can change the magnification on. I ended up missing a chance on an elk and the guide made me take it off as it was way too difficult to manipulate the magnification ring with the FTS on the scope.
To answer everyone's questions now that I'm back. All the guide did was gut the critters, load them in the truck, and take them to the processor. I then told the processor what I wanted. I didn't really have time to debone everything myself as I was trying to fill 3 tags while there in what...
I leave for my first muley/pronghorn hunt tomorrow. The outfitter I’m going with only allows the animals to be brought to the processor rather than allowing clients to do the processing. My question for all the antelope/mule deer meat lovers is what cuts of meat should I get done (e.g., should I...

Good luck out there! Been out there the last two years myself, didn’t fill a tag either time, but loved every minute of it. I’ll be out in the same general part of the state for 2nd rifle, but guided this year. I’m hoping I learn a ton so I can improve my DIY skills for the rest of my hunting...
On a related note, I just sent the check for the second half of the hunt today. I’m also planning on doing an OTC archery antlerless hunt in CO in about 5 weeks. This is after 2 DIY rifle hunts in NW CO the last couple years. I’m looking forward to the next 2 months and the same number of...
I actually applied this winter for the various western states to be able to use a crossbow. The only real one I’m not able to where I actually care is Montana. Not sure why they don’t allow crossbow use for hunters w/ medical/disability issues...
