There's actually quite a few units with 3pt and 4pt restrictions through-out the state. I hope it doesn't stay that way forever because of various reasons but I'm happy to see a state trying to actively manage Mule deer and try different things.
I go by the reg. book FWP sends me in the mail each year or what’s in their online PDF regulations. So FWP changes quotas after print of the regs? On one hand that could be a good thing. If there is a tough winter they can reduce permits. But I have never seen it used to reduce permits the same...
So I just took a look at this years regs, what do you all think about Region 7 Mule Deer doe permits going up by 3,000 permits and either sex Antelope staying the same? Are there areas in region 7 that didn't get hit with as bad of a winter? Or does fwp really always make changes one year late?
WY does a great job managing its Antelope.
The unit I'm looking at upped 150 tags, to 400. The last time I hunted that unit, there were 1,800 of the same tags issued. That's a reeeaaal gradual increase, not at all wreck-less.
Sad deal to hear about. Seems the winters in E. Montana can be more brutal than anywhere else in the lower 48. The 4 legged animals out there have earned my respect.
But It'll be 4 years before the numbers start to come back, and add a few more before a guy will start seeing a buck or two of...
Some of you guys are Lucky SOB's. Toughest odds I've been able to beat was 15%. Besides that one tag, each and every tag i have ever had in my pocket i had to wait in line for my turn; either in years worth of points or in line at the Stop 'n Go.:W:
If you're looking to just kill a Mulie, you will likely have a very good time. Small bucks are easy to find.
If you're looking to find a big one - quit now, and focus on Elk & Antelope.
Say residents did have to pay $1,200 for the combo, they would be crazy NOT to spend that money on the tags because you live right there where you hunt. Maybe you residents don’t hunt minutes away from the spots you like to hunt, but I’d bet most of your hunts are usually within a few hours of...
Well, I'm officially out of the MT game. Poor deer quality, coupled with high price and the fact that the closest border is a 17 hour drive for me just doesn't make sense to put in anymore. There's better quality Elk and Deer hunting closer. It's been a nice 15 year run.
You will need 18 inches of snow to move them down into the low country. But they will be in the transition country even if no snow on top, you just wont see them because they will be in the thick shit.
On normal years (aka little or no snow) you will find deer from the lowest country, all the...
If you are not picky, hunt Deer in SE or Eastern MT for 2 days , get the job done, then head West for Elk. Western Montana's general deer (mule deer) units are faaar from being considered even mediocre. If you can get private access, white-tail hunting in the western part of the state can be...
I believe more Elk die on opening day of rifle than any day of the rifle season. BUT, that's because a lot of guys will know where to go, or will scout a day or two in advance and be sitting on elk opening morning. After opening morning, hunting them gets very tough and you may not see an elk...

Bad drought, followed up with a tough winter isn't a good combo. Probably not as bad as the the winters in 2010 and 2011, but I don't believe there was any drought leading up to those winters. Looking like just a points year for me.
Dan! Nice to see you made it on here. You'll be a great asset to this site, that's for sure.
When is your book going to hit the market? I'm looking forward to it!
Ill send you a PM in the next couple days.
