It's pretty well been covered, but I've used them to help determine if a stalk is even viable. An example would be to range a bear on a distant hillside and find out it's 2500 yards away with a lot of elevation change with less than an hour of shooting light left. I use OnX for this too, but...
I've looked through a lot of different glass and I haven't seen any $300-500 glass that compares to the stuff you can get for about 1k. Of the ones you listed I'd get the Meopta Meostars hands down. For basically the same price you can get Zeiss Conquests, which are very good optically at that...
Those Stone Glacier bags are up there with Western Mountaineering IMO. I'd probably own one or both of their bags if they didn't only make them in a long.
Was out the last 2 days and couldn't turn up a bear for the life of me. The hiking activity has really picked up in the area and the sightings have really decreased. Going to try some other spots next weekend.
Glassed up what appeared to be a very large boar tonight. He was too far to make a stalk on with the light fading. Going to reposition myself tomorrow and try to make it happen.
I'm in the Bozeman area and would definitely go out with you sometime if you'd like. Not too experienced hunting bears in the area, but I've been out a little over the last couple years.
The Vortex tripods are not very good. Look at the compact carbon fiber one from Field Optics Research with the head of your choice. Lightweight and pretty well built.
I think most of their issues stemmed from customer service. Generally speaking they put out a pretty decent rifle, but when they didn't they were slow to fix the problems. This has been my first hand experience with them, plus is pretty much echoed by my dealer and there are an unusual number of...
I have owned a couple and still have an X3 in .300 WSM. The rifles themselves have been great but they were by far the worst company I've ever had to deal with in terms of customer service. I won't waste the time of going into details, but bottom line is it took about 4 months of constant calls...
What and where are you hunting? I agree that the cartridges listed will handle most anything. If you're regularly hunting moose and are in griz country I'd opt for something in .30-06 out of the cartridges you listed, but there probably isn't a wrong choice.
Welcome. You'll love it here. All you need for is some documentation to show that you live here. Go talk to the people at FWP after you get here and see what they say. If you have a lease agreement or closing paperwork on a house that will do. You will have to change your drivers license before...
