I agree that animals can sound terrible and unrealistic themselves. Tone and emotion in calling are more important than perfect notes.
To be clear, I didn't say calling is the magic bullet that works every time, but one would be foolish (or in denial about their own calling abilities) to...
Some great advice already given. I've been fortunate to hunt units with high bull to cow ratios and limited pressure with the exact scenario you describe. In those cases, calling was very effective and it played out just like YouTube university.
I've also hunted general/otc/high pressure units...
I have a completely opposite approach. I carry a 0 degree down bag pretty much year round. When it's warm, I throw it over me like a blanket and when it's cold, I'm able to wrap up and have stayed very warm down into the low single digits, even though my current pad is only 3.1 R value.
I fear...
I've been running a Sea to Summit Ultralight Insulated Air Pad for 6 years. It's been very durable and I have no complaints about the quality.
Comfort wise, I'm looking to improve. The pad is only 2 inches thick, so I have to inflate it to max pressure or I hit the ground when I'm sleeping...
I updated my post with the results. Wore the spenco in my boots for a 200 flight of stairs "hike" and it was night and day improvement for me. Thanks @ccc23454 for that suggestion, as well as others who suggested good options.
I'll keep experimenting as I have hard to please feet and have a...
Ordered a pair of Sof Soles and Spenco. They appear to meet my needs. If those don't work I will give the Timberlands a try, since I was able to buy both pair of those for the price of the Timberlands.
Appreciate everyone's helpful reccomendations. I'll report back next week with a review.
Update: Spenco RX Thin Lightweight Cushioning Insole were the winners for me. I did like the SOF sole alot, but unfortunately they were a little too thick for my hunting boots which I run true to size. I ended up putting them in my work boots, which are sized up, and they are perfect in those...
This may seem like a stupid question to more of you experienced mountain men, but I've always wondered about bloodied clothing and arms/hands after breaking down an animal
I have had several experiences where I made my kill (elk) late in the late afternoon, broken down the animal and spent the...
The Hubba Hubba was the first one I considered, and I looked hard at it. Unfortunately it seems they've had some QC issues the last several years and the customer service side of MSR has taken a nose dive.
Ordered the Big Agnes Copper Spur 3
HV UL 3. Lots of good reviews on top of the...
Looking for some ideas as I'd like to add a lightweight, 3 man (really 2.5) shelter setup for September backpack Elk Hunts. Me (6'2), My wife (5'4), and my 8 year old Son (4'11). Lots of good Memorial Day weekend sales right now and I'd like to pick something up soon. I'm also not opposed to...
2020 OTC elk, the last time I hunted Colorado. My buddy (on the right) and I got to our intended camp site mid morning and decided to do a cold calling sequence before setting up camp. 59 minutes in to a 1 hour planned calling setup, he came strolling in.
It was 95 degrees in Denver that...
Put in for a chance to burn my 7 points. Creep will likely mean I'm in the draw pool of preference applications, which I'm ok with since we have some other irons in the fire for elk this year.
I'm ready to burn these points though and get out of no man's land.
I imagine I'm not the only one who has lost a freezer or two...or three full of meat for one reason or another. As someone who caches a years worth of venison and fish at a time, carefully vaccum sealed and catalogued, I've been less upset over long-term relationships ending than when I have...
Lots of great info here and appreciate the feedback. I've spent about $160 on insoles ($40 a pop) trying to find something that helps, but have yet to go the gel route. Have tried superfeet and curex, which all led to different problems altogether. Will also start looking around for a cobbler...
