First Western Big Game Hunt where I am applying for tag/tags. Pronghorn and possibly mule deer.

I know that there would be some out there especially on the plains and flats that use whichever vehicle 🚗 they have. Outside of some big ruts in the road they don’t need all the ground clearance and 4x4 or AWD capability. Plus a pronghorn is small and can easily fit in a car 🚗 especially when...

First Western Big Game Hunt where I am applying for tag/tags. Pronghorn and possibly mule deer.

That’s awesome that you got to make it happen and got a second choice tag. With the tag 🏷 cuts the past two years it didn’t look like a second choice tag 🏷 is in the cards for anyone. I know that I could use my Cruze for pronghorn, except on some rutted out roads. I have taken my car down dirty...

First Western Big Game Hunt where I am applying for tag/tags. Pronghorn and possibly mule deer.

Yeah that’s true. I have grown tired of waiting on people and for schedules to line up. Something always happens every year. I can’t complain about last year’s reasons for not applying in the draws. I got married and I won a waterfowl hunting and salmon/halibut/cod fishing 🎣 trip to Alaska. It...

First Western Big Game Hunt where I am applying for tag/tags. Pronghorn and possibly mule deer.

I can see that. Pronghorn I most likely won’t need a truck and I probably could find plenty of accessible deer on some low country where I won’t need the capability of a truck. Weather dependent of course.

First Western Big Game Hunt where I am applying for tag/tags. Pronghorn and possibly mule deer.

I understand that. I didn’t financially plan to rent a truck and go with just my Dad (who is retired and probably wouldn’t go if my brother was able to come). Neither of us like to drive more than a couple hours. Even with the two of us rotating it is a 24 hour drive to Wyoming. Plus it is not...

First Western Big Game Hunt where I am applying for tag/tags. Pronghorn and possibly mule deer.

Yeah I might have been able to go, but I don’t have a truck and my Dad who has a truck and would go with me probably doesn’t want to drive a 20+ hour drive in his truck even though it’s a 14 F150 with maybe 50k miles on it. I am really bummed about it, even had tears welling up in my eyes...

First Western Big Game Hunt where I am applying for tag/tags. Pronghorn and possibly mule deer.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Sadly I once again am not able to apply or go out west from West Virginia on the hunt that I have been wanting to do for 4 years. :( I don't have a lot of hunting buddies and my youngest brother who I went out west to Idaho (even though I didn't have a tag, and I...

First Western Big Game Hunt where I am applying for tag/tags. Pronghorn and possibly mule deer.

Thank you I realize that deer and pronghorn units are different management units in the state of Wyoming. I should have stated that I am more concerned about the pronghorn units and tips on access to those units. Since general deer tags are Regional and cover a broader area I wasn't as concerned...

First Western Big Game Hunt where I am applying for tag/tags. Pronghorn and possibly mule deer.

Well this is unusual. A couple days after posting this quandary and not a single comment in return. A bit surprised, usually my fellow HTers are quick to help or even leave a funny smart a comment. I realize everyone is getting ready to or already have applied, plus I know that I am not the...

First Western Big Game Hunt where I am applying for tag/tags. Pronghorn and possibly mule deer.

Hello fellow HTers. This is my first post in a while, but I am always thankful for the advice and even the jokes on my threads. Anyway I am planning on applying for my first western big game hunt where I have a tag, after being a tag along with my Dad and youngest brother in a 2019 Idaho rifle...

Thoughts on using a military surplus ruck sack as a first pack until I can save up for a high quality/value pack for Western Big Game hunting?

Thank you for the reminder on the hunting and backpack 🎒 gear rental service. 🙏🏻

Thoughts on using a military surplus ruck sack as a first pack until I can save up for a high quality/value pack for Western Big Game hunting?

Thanks everyone for their thoughts, advice and sarcasm on my question 🙋‍♂️. I know that things can and have been done on a low budget including many DIY solutions. I will definitely give it a go, learn how to fit it and hike with weight in it. I have many months to go and May 31st drawing still...

Thoughts on using a military surplus ruck sack as a first pack until I can save up for a high quality/value pack for Western Big Game hunting?

That is a good question 🙋‍♂️ and something that I am working on. I have joined a gym and actually use my membership. But I know that I need much more training before I am ready for certain kind of hunts with multiple miles and elevation change and being out in weather conditions that are all...

Thoughts on using a military surplus ruck sack as a first pack until I can save up for a high quality/value pack for Western Big Game hunting?

Yes I am from the northern panhandle of West By God Virginia. My youngest brother has one and it worked well as a meat 🍖 hauler on a big bodied mule deer 🦌. Since it was too cold 🥶 and windy in SE Idaho in 2019 we stayed in a hotel 🏨 so he didn’t get to use it for backcountry backpack 🎒 hunting...

Thoughts on using a military surplus ruck sack as a first pack until I can save up for a high quality/value pack for Western Big Game hunting?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I am going to try it out this spring and may look into those REI backpack hiking 🥾 options that you mentioned. I don’t have an REI locally mostly Cabelas and Sportmans Warehouse

Wow 😮 that would been extremely rough. Those straps look as comfortable as ratchet straps. No padding at all.

Thoughts on using a military surplus ruck sack as a first pack until I can save up for a high quality/value pack for Western Big Game hunting?

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts and experience with a MOLLE military rucksack 🎒 as a temporary option until I can save up $$ for a high quality/value pack. Coming from West Virginia and having a very limiting budget of time and money 💵 I might be only able to get out west for one hunt...

Thoughts on using a military surplus ruck sack as a first pack until I can save up for a high quality/value pack for Western Big Game hunting?

I am curious 🧐 what everyone’s thoughts and experiences are with using a military surplus ruck for backcountry style hunts or even truck camping 🏕 and potentially packing an animal out with it? I recently was given a rucksack 🎒 by an Army Vet who volunteers at a local VA. He is a coworker and...

    Idaho Muley Unit 76/66A Rifle

My brother was able to get his big bodied 3x3 buck 2 miles back and at around 7000 feet. He was almost at the top by some aspen trees bedded down. He wouldn’t have seen him if he didn’t stand up.

Trouble finding replacement bowstrings and cables for my 06' PSE Fire Flite 33 LH compound bow.

I was able to purchase a custom three color bow string (black, green and tan) and I had it installed by Cabelas right before season last year. Thank you all for your insight.
