Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

That’s a pretty awesome project on a weapon with history. Practically tells a story. I am scouring GunBroker now to see what I can find. Preferably a left hand action which is rare, but my late 90s Savage M110 in .270 Win is a lefty.

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

That’s awesome. Being a creative person I would love to learn and do some safe and legit customization of rifles. Even at the “base” level of switching out barrels and stocks, maybe put in a TriggerTech or Timney trigger etc… I have looked at using a Rem 700 ADL or Savage Axis or M110 etc.. as a...

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

That was my thought about the lateral move to another rifle in 300 WSM and for some reason moved it over to the .308 information gathering question. My bad. If I were to go that route I don’t think that I would take the $300 hit for a slower less powerful cartridge. Yes Accuracy is more...

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

@BAKPAKR my Dad’s first reliable rifle was chambered in 30/30 and he took some deer with it, but there was an instance where he was hunting and saw a buck 🦌 at 300 yards in a field and tried multiple times and never touched it. After that he wanted a rifle that can literally reach out and touch...

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

My brother the one with the 7 Mag, really likes the Kimber Hunter and wants one. I would love one in 280 AI someday. I actually don’t have $1200 cash hanging around, but if I sold my 300 WSM for $900 I would use that money 💵 and turn around and buy another rifle. Practically like trading lol 😆...

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

Makes a lot of sense. I was thinking about getting one separately or addition to the my two other rifles. In either 308 or 7mm 08. But since my wife and I are wanting to get out of this small apartment I can’t spend too much at one time. Even though I probably could find a good one with a...

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

Yes that’s the brand that I was going to go for when I was looking at getting a .30 cal to accompany my .270 Win. In both the .308 and .300 WSM, but I couldn’t pass on the deal for my current rifle in the Savage M110 Long Range Hunter. I know that it’s 8.4 lbs but aside from the brake that extra...

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

Side note I talked with my brother about the suggestion by @VikingsGuy @Don Fischer of going with a new cartridge that is not a magnum especially the .308. He said that the .308 Win would be a good all around cartridge for anything that we would hunt at ranges that we believe are ethical based...

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

According to my Google maps Altoona is a little over 3 hours away from me in WV. Not too bad. It would be awesome to see a 6x6 elk while deer 🦌 hunting especially since I haven’t made it out west since 2019, of which I didn’t see an elk, just their prints. My brother did though. If I get my PA...

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

Wow that’s awesome 🤩 and plenty of places for the deer 🦌 and turkey 🦃 to hide. That’s about 3.5 hours northeast of me. Not too bad. I have done it before.

I definitely will let you know. I actually want to get my first deer 🦌 with a bow. I also want to try more property. See new places that I can legally hunt or fish 🎣 You love to collect 7mms I see lol 😆 Ok I will ask him and let you know.

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

It was the biggest bodied 6 point or deer that my Dad has seen hit the dirt in a long time. It was a quarter to shot with 185 Berger Hunter Hybrids from Federal. It definitely broke his leg but didn’t pass through like I hear about Bergers in general. Like a small grenade. He actually charged me...

Yeah I will have to find some Kroil and just leave the brake off.

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

I definitely can respect that. No matter how macho some of us try to be, we can still be sensitive to recoil. My Dad let me use his 300 WM when I was a teenager to take a couple does before buying me that late 90s Savage M110 in 270 Win when I was 15. I can handle an unbraked 300 WM or WSM in...

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

I remember you being from PA after me posting questions about my brother’s 7mm Rem Mag and his issues. He sadly gave up on it and it just sits there unscoped with a muzzle brake that he paid $400 to have put on. I would definitely like to stretch its legs. I will have to find such areas. Since I...

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

Ok 👌 I will get some of that solvent/penetrating oil and do that instead if Savage doesn’t work with me. That’s rather reasonable. Part of me would rather have a brake that I could take off and cap during hunting season vs that brake that ceased up on me. Thank you 🙏

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

I would be happy to turn it off. Unless I am doing a long shooting session trying to figure out a reload for my rifle the recoil doesn’t bother me.

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

What’s the average price for something like that to be done? I am sure that it all depends on the gunsmith and their experience level and what they want to charge. My youngest brother paid $400 to have his 7mm threaded and a muzzle brake put on.

Best cost effective solution to the current issue with my Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in .300 WSM

You’re like Captain Jack Sparrow 🐦 in the fact that you love RUMs so much. I have never shot one, but my youngest brother tried a 7mm RUM and didn’t like it. My 5’10” 160 lb 65 year old Dad loves his Winchester M70 in 300 WM that he has had since 1978, it doesn’t have a brake. He doesn’t want to...

Thank you for sharing your advice and thoughts. The new Ruger Marlin SBL or Trapper in 45/70 is a dream gun of mine. I just love the looks and feel of a lever gun. Plus with Ohio being a straight wall state that would be perfect if one could find one. I wanted a left handed Tikka in 300 WSM for...
