FWP's 2024 overall analysis of black bear mortality patterns in BMU's 411, 420, 520, and 580:
"Following the 2020 Covid pandemic, interest in black bear hunting in central Montana increased substantially resulting in a dramatic increase in harvest across most of the area. Harvest in BMU 520 was...
As much as I like the thought of hunting bears until mid June, it seems like it would be hard on the resource, at least in region 4.
"Current harvest rates in the Snowies, Little Belts, and Crazy Mountains are not sustainable. Even in The Beartooths, where a female harvest quota is in place, we...
I'm going off Region 4's recommendations for the proposed amendment. I should have clarified the 11% increase due to hound hunting was just in region 4, which is where the majority of the hound hunting occurs. This was even with restricted access due to near-record snowpack.
I haven’t looked in years past, is it typical for the MT tag to go for less than the CO, OR, and NM tags? I would have thought MT would have brought in the most cash.
Do you know whether it was the local bio’s or department staff in Helena that declined? There was a recent collaring project in the works for 410 but the staff in Helena pulled the plug on it.
The old Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs hotel at Nelson Reservoir was a little run down. I went there with a group of buddies for an ice fishing trip every winter. It was about $40 a night. We'd always bring sleeping bags to sleep on top of the covers, wasn't uncommon to find a mouse in your room...
This is one of the best ideas I’ve seen. It would be even better if deer season was moved up a week so it ended after the first week of November instead of going into mid November.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of unintended consequences of things passed in the legislature that are even harder to reverse than decisions made by FWP. Things like Come Home to Hunt, Native NR tags, etc. haven't done us any favors.
I'd have to agree with SAJ-99. It sure seems that "screw the NR" is a popular sentiment among Montanans. It's even a common attitude among residents in central and eastern MT that western MT residents aren't deserving of elk permits on the eastern side of the state.
I definitely think we...
This. It's been happening with the LE archery elk permits in the Breaks for years, and the latest example is the 900 archery antelope permits. Residents get used to drawing a LE permit every year, and when demand starts to exceeds the supply, the immediate reaction is to increase the quota to...
It seems a lot of people are willing to limit mule deer hunting but want to keep whitetail general. I don't hunt western MT, are the whitetail just doing great on public land in R1, R2, and R3? I'd hate to benefit one species at the expense of another. Based on what I see in the eastern half of...
Maybe that works in Colorado. I’m imaging the HD’s in central and eastern MT that are already crowded in archery season as it is, then you add general deer hunters on top of that? It would be a disaster.
The data was shown to prove that at the R4 season setting meetings. In 410, the increase in cow hunting pressure aligned with the increase in mule deer harvest.
