Grew up in Rathdrum, and lived in Post Falls for several years, before moving to Wyoming. I would have to agree with my buddy nidahunter (just don't tell him I said that), lots of timber company lands that are great hunting within a short drive...
When I was there in the late 80's and early 90's (go Vandals!!) The school forest areas were always a good bet. Check out West Hatter Creek and Flat Creek. Also plenty of forest service lands up Big Creek and the Palouse River. Good Luck!!

Picketed the horses at night and in the morning. At lunch we hobbled them out to eat grass, and either left them hobbled during the afternoon hunt, or tied them back up. This was my third season hunting up there (Pinedale side), and each year has been a blast! The weather up there...
Just got back from an early rifle elk hunt in the Wind River Mountains. What an incredible hunt!

Packed in the day before the season, the views were incredible...
Welcome. lived in St. Maries until I was 11, then spent the rest of my youth in Rathdrum. Spent lots of time hunting around Fighting cr., Plummer, etc..Wonderful place to live!!
Thanks everyone. It was definitely a cool hunt. I have never gotten to chase elk with a rifle during the rut, and never hunted at 10,000 feet elevation before either, definitely was sucking wind for the first few days!!
