I’ve thought of putting it in the back of my truck. I’ve got a 4dr with a 6.5’ box and I have ramps.
My plan has been to leave my topper on and just road camp out of that if I’m not sleeping in the woods someplace.
I could give that up and just plan to tent it next to the truck if I’m not in...
I have no idea where to elk hunt that I could ride an ATV to start a stalk?!
The closest elk I’ve seen to a road was at least 3/4mi away. Most much further. That’s in areas that I might be able to see 100y on a good day.
Its certainly not an "ethics" issue for me personally. I know that how I plan to use it is legal, and I know that I would have no temptation to use it illegally for access or game retrieval. As mentioned, its the trade off between limiting the roads that I would be willing to drive with my truck...
Do you guys know, is FWP still mailing out tags still like they did the Deer/Elk tags this year or have they moved to the print your own tag situation on these pronghorn licenses?
This is a bit of my concern. I can't figure on a way to get out there and back with gear, coolers and ATV without the hassle of hauling a trailer. A trailer might limit the roads I can drive, so then i might be on the ATV more. Also, alone there were a few of those mountain roads that I might...
Headed to central MT elk hunting in just 25 short days. This will be my 4th elk hunt but my first 100% solo.
I've been debating on hauling an ATV out there since last Sept when I was out there last. The area that I'm headed back to there really are no roads that I cant drive with my pickup so...
There are a few pheasants out there, lots of sharpies.
I've deer hunted the area quite a bit and have thought about bringing my Springer out there too, but I've always been afraid of the cactus and rattlesnakes. Two things she's never had to deal with here at home in MN. Curious, what do you do...
My son and I drew our 007-20 tags with 3 points/4th year applying! This will be my sons first chance to hunt big game other than deer.
Now, I have to decide if we pick him up a deer tag for the youth season while were out there too...?
Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this, I appreciate it.
One of the hardest parts of all of this is that prior to last years hunt to this area we "e-scouted" this pretty heavily wooded country a ton. We looked for N facing slopes for bedding cover, S facing hillsides and small open parks in the...
Diamond hitch, I agree with you there. I’ve been fortunate enough to draw my mule deer tag in MT for 7yrs in a row now and feel like we’ve finally got our hunting area dialed in. There are better areas I’m sure, but where I go I know where to hunt if it’s been hot, I know where to go when it...
Thanks for the comments. I do feel like those elk got bumped out of several of these areas by early season pressure.
I’d love to hunt bugling bulls screaming in my face but, in all the public land, pressured area hunts I’ve been on we’ve never really hit that. We were on the mountain from...
Working on figuring out this elk hunting thing. I'm heading in for my 4th elk trip to MT this fall. So far, I've bounced around a lot and spent time in the breaks, the Gravellies and the Belts. Once was rifle, twice with a bow mid Sept and once early Oct. I did manage to kill a bull with my bow...
I totally understand, I read all of the info and I still went too because I know what I'm doing and I can read a map etc... I shot a doe, my partner shot a forky. Another friend joined the club last year. He hunted the muzzleloader season. Put in 8 or 9 days and never saw a mule deer. He said...
Welcome to the... "I wonder if Nebraska is any good for mule deer club"!
Price of admission is cheap. The answer will come quickly!
Lots of people will try to steer you away. They are not wrong. Lots of people, lots of ATVs in places ATVs shouldn't be, not a lot of deer. But, some things a guy...
Man reading some of these I thought my plate was full.
MT archery elk - going for a 9 day solo trip for the opener
Still waiting on: MT pronghorn with my 15yo son, had 4 points so should draw. Will pick up a youth deer combo too since youth deer is during antelope opener week.
MT mule deer in...
My last dog was a field bred english cocker spaniel - not an american cocker basically a 35# springer. When she passed I had more space and bought a springer who has turned out to be a bit on the small side and pretty similar to my cocker anyways.
Any field bred dog is going to be high energy...
If you haven't been out there in 12 years you might not recognize it. One of the old main access roads is gone, more oil rigs and spurs in other spots, and I haven't been out there for several years either so I'm sure its changed more.
Would still be my 1st choice for a ND mule deer tag though...
