I know everyone hates people asking for advice then never posting a follow up:
Everyone’s advice here was overwhelmingly pointing me one direction, so after battling weather to make it out there I was off to WY.
My goal was simply the first legal elk that gave me an opportunity and it didn’t...
I’ve never seen as many hunters anyplace as I saw on rifle antelope opener last year. There were 12 rigs camped at my normal camping spot when we pulled in. It was absolutely insane.
If you have larger calves, you want the OR Crocodiles. At least when I looked they were the biggest ones out there short of custom and they work great.
Smaller legs, they might be baggy.
I was 176 on the deer combo and am #5 as of today. So I assume it’s moved 171 spots since the initial draw.
It moved 99 the first time they sent out now it moves ~15 each time they update which is every -10days.
Congrats on your first antelope - some of my favorite meat.
Don’t freeze them! They’ll be great right away or in 2 days (in fridge). Just don’t over cook them…! I try not to cook venison steaks past 130F at most. Sometimes a bit less if I’m feeling froggy.
Yeah, either way I’ve got my schedule cleared to head out 10/15 because I had to start clearing my work schedule before I knew where I was headed.
I suspect that the potential for snow, rain, muddy roads etc… is similar in both places. That’s probably a check in the SM column. If I ever got...
Definitely wilderness in there but there is plenty of ground outside of it to roam as well and honestly, hunting alone and packing out alone, most of the access points don’t get close enough to matter for me.
Thank for the insight!
I posted here a few weeks back about my unsuccessful guided archery elk hunt that has left me planning on short notice a solo rifle elk hunt. I've spent a ton of time going thru the Job Completion reports, harvest stats, maps etc... and I think I have a decent plan in place for either of these...
If they were a-hole to elbow busy and just couldn’t service you at the time I can see it. If they weren’t busy, I know the bow shop I use would have done it.
If you’re looking for your pound of flesh, Bowtech has protected territories. Email them and share your experience and if you bought...
70 used to have leftovers every year. Unfortunately, now it takes several points to draw. The issue is, that the tag numbers haven’t changed much and the quality of the unit hasn’t improved. The only thing that’s changed is that more people are applying in general.
FWIW, I’d look someplace else...
I used to hunt 70 quite a bit back when it was available as a leftover.
When it was a leftover it was worth it but, I don’t think I’d burn points for it. There will be lots of antelope on the private land alfalfa fields and you may catch a few cutting thru some of the public and HMAs but take a...
The area I’m going to is a GEN unit. In WY you always have a chance in the random draw but iirc it took 4 points to draw a GEN tag in the regular draw.
Like it or not killing that buck was the right thing to do. A loose, farm raised deer is just begging to spread CWD and nobody wants that shite in their deer herd.
Bob-WY: Its a General Elk Tag.
Where we were at, it was good Sept 1-Sept 30 for archery/Any Elk with an archery permit and Oct 1 - 31 for rifle/Any Elk.
Where I'm planning to head, Its good Oct 15-31 for Rifle/Any Elk.
Unless I've completely misunderstood the regs, in which case please let me...
