That is a good looking bear. Congrats on getting it done. I had never thought of using a crossbow for taking bear (not legal here sadly), but I can see why that would make sense.
Curious, how did you get it weighed?
I use the Tethrd mantis with the Predator Platform. I use Hawk Heliums but I swapped the ratchet straps for the Tethrd Versa straps to save on weight and bulk (I still use a ratchet for the platform since it's more secure and you spend more time on it shifting weight). On thing I did differently...
Sweet!!! You'll like it. Just make sure you practice shooting all your angles before you hunt. It takes some getting used to on the drop shot (leaning out away from the tree shooting behind you). What's your climbing method going to be?
Tree Saddle. The platform fits in my pack and I can wear my harness. The sticks for climbing get strapped to the side of my pack. With 2 sticks and a rope aider I can get about 16' off the ground with less than 8lbs of gear and very little bulk. So that's my setup.
If I have time to preset...
I am way south of Portland in both geography and temperament; other than the food carts (which mercifully exist everywhere) I could leave that town off my list forever.
I have been cooking him, so far I have been doing really simple classic stuff (roasts, barbacoa, braised meatballs). I have...
Honestly, if there was a petition for silencers and magazine-fed semi-automatic center fire rifles to swap places I'd sign it in a heartbeat. There are shotgun suppressors, and I can't imagine the price would not go down if you could buy them off the shelf.
In my experience the Sordins don't...
Back in the comfort of my own home. I can now reflect on what this hunt meant to me. The word I keep coming back to is Gratitude. I could say I got a bear, in fact I could say “I got the bear I was looking for”. That would be technically accurate, but existentially wrong. The list of names I...
He got 20 yards away from me before one of the bags slipped from his pack to the ground. If you have ever been truly tired and then faced a simple problem, you know the feeling of your brain just refusing to help you solve it. Dawson’s brain had broken, I watched him stare at his pack for...
I normally say that when it comes to hunting my expertise is after the animal hits the ground. This bear rocked that assumption a bit. First off, it was way more massive than what I expected to get. I’m a farmer used to moving heavy things by hand, and Dawson is young with the physique of a body...
That brings us to where we started this story. Those moments are in my mind forever. I never did get my hearing protection on (a point my wife will rightly remind me of for time immemorial; it’s nice to be cared for). I settled into my rifle, on the bear, looking at his massive shoulder blocking...
“Ok” I said, kinda surprised, but he was right “where do you want me to set up?”
“About five yards to your right”
I set up the caller and the decoy. Mr Wigglebunny required a bit of harmonic dampening, so I stuffed some woodchips in the device to make it sound much better. It eliminated that...
After our time at the truck I had an idea of what we were going to do. We were going to set up a *call/decoy in a different part of the drainage. I did not tell Dawson this at the time, but it was mostly so I could take a nap and come up with a serious plan for what we were going to do. That is...
I was excited to finally have intentionally laid eyes on a bear, but that feeling was mixed with the frustration of yet again falling just shy of my goal. I needed a reset. “New plan, we are going to quietly work our way back to the truck. There is raspberry cake in that cooler, we are cutting...
I told Dawson when we discussed the hunt that range was not the issue. We’d easily get close to bears. Vegetation, on the other hand would be a big issue. I could see the understanding of that comment come across Dawson’s face as we closed in on the bear. Try as we might, and as close as we...
Ok. Rather than do several posts for the story. I think I am going to add the rest of the story to this thread in the comments. Here goes....
Eleven hours earlier I rolled out of bed more or less to stop the horrifying hip hop music coming from the alarm clock on the wife’s side of the bed. I...
If the smoke is not enough to send you inside BLM has announced several closures around the active fires.

Please check the regs before venturing out, and stay safe. Some of...
Why I bought a real one. I'd use a belt first.
Oh, I have also used them to truss up small game when I was using rope for something else and did not have a game bag.
All sorts of things. I have used them to repair a pack when a zipper failed. I use them help make brush blinds sometimes. Securing tags, reataching loose hoses on a truck, temporarally patching irrigation line on the farm, etc. I have not had to use one as a tourniquet (I keep a real tourniquet...
Tight Spot QD. It's just the best out there. The adjustments really help a long draw guy like myself, as that quiver is the only one where I can keep the arrows within the profile of the cams. This is helpful when you are ambush hunting from the ground and need to keep the bow on your thigh to...
