High Country Mule Deer Trip - Lessons Learned

If you are on a trail you can cover distance much faster and 1.8 mph is a realistic goal. Don’t plan on 1.8 mph for 3 hours in the Idaho mountains without a trail and a 50lb pack.

High Country Mule Deer Trip - Lessons Learned

I agree it is always a good idea to check your rifles zero. For shots less than 300 yard, your zero probably won't shift more than a couple inches and won't be a big factor. If you want to shoot at extended ranges, knowing your exact zero is critical. There are way to many guys out hunting that...

    NM Unit 24

No reason to waste the money on a bear tag because the bear quota will likely be filled by the time your hunt opens. If you really want a bear tag, wait until you arrive for your hunt and verify that the quota hasn't been fill. I've spent some time hunting in 24. You can find deer anywhere in...

Idaho Mule Deer OTC Success Rates - Real World Experience

Being in top physical shape to climb the mountains mountains around Ketchum will make your hunt much more enjoyable. You could have an enjoyable hunt in any of the units in that area (43,48,49,36, 36a, 36b, etc). Just the experience of hiking around those mountains will probably make the trip...

Idaho Mule Deer OTC Success Rates - Real World Experience

I do think the harvest numbers on the F&G website are fairly accurate. You can look at the trends over the last few years and see that there was a big drop a couple years ago in many units. https://idfg.idaho.gov/press/harvest-hunter-numbers-down-deer-and-elk-2019 I've killed deer or elk in...

    NM Coues Hunting

Yes, all three are NM deer. The first two are 2018 and the bottom one is 2017. NM coues are not easy but there are a few out there if you look for them.

    NM Coues Hunting

I killed NM coues in 2017 and 2018. Unless you are a NM resident, I think AZ should be your first choice for coues. NM coues units are no secret but it won’t be an easy hunt. Largest concentrations will be in 23, 24 and 27.

    30 inches?

I think he will break 30”. In the last 5 years I’ve killed a 32”, 30.5” and 28” muleys and put a friend on a 31” buck. I judged all of their width correctly before they hit the dirt.

Wyoming Nonresident Elk Draw Result Date Changed

Why not change the application date and draw results to the same time as residents? I liked the early NR elk draw in Wyoming but I understand why it was changed.

    Which Swarovski STX Objective Lens?

I have the 95 mm. I've packed it many times. One hunt I didn't see a road or vehicle for a week. It is big and bulky and not something you will be happy with if you want a light pack. I find I really only need it for evaluating antlers at long distances. Sometimes I don't pack it and only pack...

    Montana Mule Deer District 270

Thanks for sharing the story and pictures. I've been on some similar hunts. I've learned to enjoy the experience and to not care as much about the antlers. Sounds like you were able to enjoy the exeperience I've hunted other unit similar to this and I believe the lack of bucks with big antlers...

    30-06 Pinball Wizard

I have never seen that. I don't doubt that it did happen but if it happened to me, I would have thought someone else had shot the deer and I just put the finishing round in it.

Having trouble finding mule deer 🦌 especially bucks in Idaho unit 76 and 66a. Any reason why? Any help would be appreciated.

You should check the regulations before you hunt 78. General season Idaho isn't easy. It takes a lot of effort and experience to be consistently successful. There are deer in 66a and 76 but there are also a lot of other hunters. Deer will respond to that pressure and as a result it isn't easy...

    Field care of Antelope

I've done boneless, quartered or just gutted. The important thing is that you cool the meat just like you would deer or elk. The problem is that it isn't uncommon for someone to shoot a pronghorn when it is 90 degrees outside and drive around with it in the back of their truck the rest of the...

    My Wyoming Pronghorn

I had a great time in Wyoming this last week. I have an old friend from High School that lives there so it was fun to spend some time together. I never did find a giant pronghorn in my unit but I was able to look over about 300 different bucks before I pulled the trigger. I saw a few that might...

    Judging pronghorn is hard!

Greenhorn, Those are some really nice bucks. You don't double up on a couple pronghorn like that in Wyoming by just being lucky. You have to put in the work of looking over a bunch of bucks and have the skill to judge how good they really are.

    Judging pronghorn is hard!

This last week I looked over about 300 bucks before I pulled the trigger and I never did see one that I believe would break 80" in my unit. They sure are fun to hunt and taste delicious. Judging pronghorn is extremely difficult. The difference between an average pronghorn and a Booner is often...

Moving to a one gun battery (maybe)

I'm ok with only one women in my life but only one rifle wouldn't work well for me. My biggest problem is that it is always nice to have a backup gun. I've brought a back up gun on every hunt I've been on the last 5 years and it is nice to have just incase I take a fall and "bump the scope"...

    Mule Deer Bedding

Deer defiantly have certain spots they like to bed. I've found deer in the same bedding areas, year after year. Watching deer from a distance and seeing where they like to bed will teach you a lot about an area. The more time you can spend watching deer in your area, the more you will learn...
