    WI bear!!!

Game sleds make it easy. In 2019 we dragged a 435 lb bear through the woods, some uphill, using a game sled. It wasn't 100 yards (more like 40), but 100 wouldn't have been a problem. Getting the bear into the sled was more work than the dragging itself. I learned this lesson the hard way...

Changing rifles because of excess recoil.

I've always felt that even for the big animals, the only reason to go "magnum" was for range. It's interesting that Alaska F&G's recommended brown bear cartridge is .30-'06.

Welcome Browning Rifles. I love bear meat too. Where did you move from?

Changing rifles because of excess recoil.

Happy Myles, my experience is much unlike yours. I have a lot less of it, and only short range woods hunting. However, I couldn't agree with you more about the lack of practice. My "thing" is shooting black bears over bait at short distance in the woods. To you western elk/sheep hunters, it...

Anyone using a tactical bipod for hunting?

Oh please, no more food B.S.! Out east, I see a lot more tall bipods (~3-4') than these short ones. We don't get too much opportunity for prone.

Congrats to your friend, and kudos to you for lending her your rifle.

Changing rifles because of excess recoil.

How well do those suppressors work when using supersonic ammo? I'd hate to go subsonic on something like a .308.

Changing rifles because of excess recoil.

I hear you about losing the weight. Had the same thought "Why worry about an extra pound on the rifle when I can drop 10 pounds from my body instead?" Did a woods hound hunt this October, and I worked up to it for months, mainly on the stationary bike. Didn't lose much weight, but gained a...

(Questions/Advice) Wife wants to start hunting

Not wife, but my then 15-year old daughter decided out of the blue that she wanted to try bear hunting in 2019. Got nothing that year, but this year she connected. We bought her camo but like all teens, she is growing rapidly. When something doesn't fit, she'll often just dive into my own...

Looking for smaller caliber "Ballistic twin"

I've gone through a similar exercise motivated by cost, not recoil. In my .308s, the cheap 150-grain Core Lokts perform almost identically to the 150-grain Trophy Copper (I can't explain this). The 180-grain Fusions fly like the 165-grain Trophy copper. In .243, the 100-grain Core-Lokts are...

Changing rifles because of excess recoil.

Its nice to have multiple cartridges to choose from to suit your needs. I try to keep my calibers limited, right now with .243, .308, and .338 Fed. .30-'06 seems too close to .308 for me to bother. Can't bring myself to go 6.5 Creedmoor. I think .338 Fed is as high as I need to go, but a...

Changing rifles because of excess recoil.

Mid 50s and sporting a keg, but not in terrible shape. (Just got back from a woodland bear hunt with hounds and I did OK). My style of hunting is generally ambush, so that does not present a problem. For still hunting deer, or if I ever get around to a western elk hunt, that's where I would...

    Poll: Do-it-all freezer fillin' rifle

Whadya get in 300 WSM? Going from a 6.5 Creedmoor to a .300 WSM sounds like it would be quite a jump. I got into .338 Federal because CDNN had a big sale on some of the less popular Savage Model 11s. A friend, who bought their .270, clued me in to the sale. I was really torn between the .338...

    Any close black bear encounters?

In 2018 I had a blind set up abutting a logging road, with me facing into the woods. I heard a huff out the left window and saw a sow with a cub maybe 10 yards away. Readied the gun. A second cub came to her, so I thought she smelled me and would be on her way once she had both cubs. But she...

Changing rifles because of excess recoil.

It probably has more to do with me not shooting at long distance, but the more I hunt, the more I find powerful rifles unnecessary. Durango, how bad is it trudging around with a 9-10 lb rifle? My new rifle, intended to be my main bear rifle starting next year, falls into that range and I am a...

    GUN BAN

You and elkmagnet are putting words in my mouth, and no, how you voted is not relevant here. I didn't say they cheated (though I suspect they did), I said there are irregularities - something that warrants looking into. That's why the courts need to investigate. I also never claimed it would...

Changing rifles because of excess recoil.

I bought a .338 Federal stainless rifle this year and was surprised at how low the recoil was. This seemed odd - until I weighed the rifle: 9.5 lbs. Damn, I wish I had chosen a lighter model. I also went a bit heavy on rings and the scope. Later, I bought my girl a lightweight .308. Was...
