That's because you misread my post. I never claimed the .243 was better for black bear than 6.5 Manbun. Reread my post. I said that I thought 6.5 CM is on the small side for black bears - I stand by that. I do think that .243 is a good choice for Whitetail, not black bear. To be clear, I...
I hear you about the 6.5 Screedmoor. I don't "hate" it, but I see little use for it. I think its on the small side for black bear and larger. For whitetail I like .243 and 7mm-08 better.
I've been to bear camp six times, well over 100 hunters. Have not seen a 6.5 Creedmoor yet.
Uh oh. Sounds like someone is throwing down the gauntlet on my favorite wiz-bang cartridge, the .338 Federal.
If I lived west of the Mississippi, I think I would have no use for this cartridge. Where it shines for me is in woods black bear hunting. I think of it as a ".308 Improved" and much...
I don't own a Ruger American but have fired several. Using the universal Savage Rifle grading index, I put the American above the Axis II but below the 110. I have not had trouble with the American's rotary magazine but have read from others who did not like them. Like almost every modern...
Well done! As my name suggests, once I got my first black bear, I was hooked. Just dropped #7 this year and put my daughter onto her first. We'll be going to Maine next year for bear camp.
Be warned. Heroin is less addictive than bear hunting.
This year, for the first time, I had to deliberately shoot my bear in the upper arm. He was in a tree and the vitals were covered, so in the upper arm my 165 Federal Vital Shok .308 went. We never found the bullet, but found two copper petals. I suspect that perhaps copper was a better choice...
I find the copper bullets to be at least as accurate as the cup and core/bonded lead bullets. Where I am still skeptical is expansion. So far in my admittedly small sample, lead bullets seem to expand better and provide much better blood trails. My shots have all been short range though.
Ok folks, if anybody still cares, I bought the Athlon Neos 3x9x40" lighted reticle scope. I thank you all for the help - I might not have found this otherwise.
I almost bought the Hawke scope, but after downloading the drawings I came to learn that it was too short for the mounts I presently...
Funny this came up now. In another thread, I asked for help finding a lighted crosshair reticle scope. Some of the search advice led me to Hawke (nobody suggested it by name if I recall) and I had homed in on a model for the daughter's .308.
All looked good, until I checked the mounting tube...
Great hit. I got the same thing back in 2013 in .308. The Nikon scope is much better than the Bushnell scopes they put on most of their other combo rifles. Also, the Model 11/111/110 is a huge step up from the Axis.
Just had a major score this weekend. A Wal-Mart had 150-grain Federal .308s, both Fusions at PowerShoks and pre-plandemic pricing. "How many would you like, sir?" HOW MANY YOU GOT? Maybe I went a little overboard, but now my daughter also shoots .308, and we practice a lot.
Seriously, don't waste your time on Taxachusetts. I live just north of there, and I don't know anybody who goes down there to hunt. Not worth the trouble.
