Sorry, I got to the party pretty late. But, it seems that you’ve made a decision. Matter of fact....a pretty good choice of bullets! ;)
I highly recommend deciding on one bullet, and use it exclusively. In the “heat of battle”, is no time to be thinking about various trajectories, different...
My “only” hunting rifle (for all big game), .375 AI....not the most common cartridge. My wife....a “standard run of the mill” .338 WM. Same for her.....one cartridge for all big game. memtb
Edward, my suggestions would be the Barnes TTSX, we’ve used Barnes Bullets exclusively since the mid-‘90’s. While we are very satisfied with Barnes, if I were just staring out....I would look seriously at Hammer Bullets. I’ve heard nothing but great reviews on the Hammer Bullets! memtb
Well, if your gonna brake it....a .338 WM is hard to beat for an elk rifle, or any other game for that matter. My wife has used a Win. Model 70 in .338 WM (no brake) since ‘96. She’s taken several head of game out to 400 yards. Almost all of her kills have been one shot! As we handload, she’s...
Nice deer! Ya done good, considering it was a relatively short hunt! Just curious, about where we’re you hunting? Nothing too specific, Lake Alice, Nugget Canyon, Smith’s Fork, ect. memtb
With the original “X” bullets, a clean bore was pretty critical....especially so, if the bore was a little rough. Back in the early ‘90’s, I was told to treat them as though they were cast bullets....send them down a clean bore. A match grade (polished) was more forgiving. With the advent of the...
While the Barnes Bullets may not be perfection.....they’re pretty close! Barnes has been our “only” hunting bullet since the early ‘90’s. They were good then.....they’re “great” now! With numerous Antelope, elk, moose, and a bear, almost all were one shot kills. And, have only recovered 2...
I prefer a bit heavier bullet for larger game, so we used Barnes 140 TSX in our daughter’s 270, though she’s only taken deer and antelope with it! As our shots can be rather long, we chose the 140 for the extra weight and the slightly higher BC. However, the 130 TTSX, should be a good choice as...
Here in the Bighorn Basin, we haven’t had any winter. We’ve had a few cool/cold days....only a few quite cold days, -15 or colder. We’ve been unseasonably warm, most of the winter.Getting some snow in the northwestern and western mountains. However, it appears that they’re getting pretty hard...
You’re doing a great job as a dad! Keep up the good work. And, congratulations to your son on his first deer. I’ve 3 grandsons that hunt in MS, I think 2 of the 3 had their first deer by age 6. It’s great to see kids raised in a hunting family, very likely will become great young men! memtb
Either will work fine....with proper shot placement and a good bullet! But, and many will disagree..... I prefer that elk calibers start with a .3 ! memtb
