Hogs move ALOT. 10-15 years ago I shot hogs almost ever time I was on my lease in S.C. The destroyed food plots feeders, rooted up ditches and were a general PIA. Fast foreward, I haven’t seen one on property in several years. FWIW Most commercial FL hog operations are putting hogs out to...
Yes. They are the old Czech made Accurate powders.
I’ve used Clean Shot (AA 2) and Match Rifle (AA2520)
Their Precision powder was formulated to compete directly with Varget.
Paired with the 131 Blackjack bullets it’s an excellent LR cartridge target cartridge. With standard .257 hunting bullets it’s nothing special. It’s slight advantages over the 25 Souper, are the same as the 6.5 Creedmoor over the 260.
Guy is right. They were different from the standard Partitions, they had a steel cup in the shank.
Fail Safes were copper bullets with a cavity in the base that had lead in it.
There is nothing to keep anyone wanting to use a traditional black powder rifle from doing so,
that I’m aware of.
Same with shooting sports. Most I’m aware of have divisions based on equipment restrictions, which allow folks to compete with the equipment of their choosing.
I much prefer the look of a traditional stock, but the ergonomics of that stock are superior in every shooting position. I would suggest a little time shooting one if possible.
Shoot high shoulder with that GMX and he will be laying right where you shot him. If you’re going to shoot a whitetail in the lungs use a faster expanding bullet.
I’ve reloaded a lot of 308. Used a lot of powders, From Benchmark to RL 17. 8208 XBR has become my powder of choice. From 125 to 180, it’s the most accurate in my rifles. It meters really well and is the least temp sensitive I’ve tried.
Barnes list Varget as their most accurate. I’d be happy...
I’ve had featherweight 308s that will kick the snot out of you and heavier magnums that were much tamer to shoot. Cartridge is less important than fit IMO.
I’d get a rifle that fits and is easy to find ammo for. A 270 is pretty hard to beat for the game you’ve listed.
Local shop had a bunch of the 300 groaners on close out. Bought some to try out and they shoot really well. Same POI as the Thor’s at a fraction of the cost. Anybody used them on game?
Done both several times. Last time I flew I froze my boned out antelope meat and put it in cooler with cape and head (57lbs) and shipped overnight from Fed Ex in Ft Collins. The shipping cost was less than extra/ overweight baggage fee. Air fare is stupid cheap right now.
Drove from SC last...
Not the same bullet. The original Winchester Silvertip had a metallic cap on the tip of the bullet. The Ballistic Silvertip is a completely different projectile.
Get a good barrel and a good trigger and build around those two items. You want a free floating hand guard.
The rest really doesn’t matter as much. Krieger, Bartlein, Criterion, White Oak, all bulld great AR barrels.
I want to love double guns and have had a bunch. Only one I have now is a 12 ga A. H. Fox Sterlingworth. I’ve had Winchester 21s and 24s, several Ithacas, LC Smith’s and a couple of AYAs. The last hunt I did with a SXS was shooting marsh hens with an Ithaca .410 out of a hand made poling...
