    Rifle and caliber question

All of the rifles you have will kill moose and elk - but if you want a new rifle, go with the .338 WinMag. A lot easier to get factory ammo for, and a wide variety of loads and bullet weights. I was born in Alaska, and have been lucky enough to hunt there 12-13 times over the past 15 years. I...

    2017 Monster Moose !!!!

Thanks for posting, that's a nice bull. Someone shot an 80 incher up there this year, an AK resident I think.

    2017 Moose and Caribou Hunt

Thanks Knute! I'm gonna take a break next year and go somewhere with my girlfriend, but have 2 partners in the queue for future hunts. :) Hope you and your son and family are doing well!

    2017 Moose and Caribou Hunt

Thanks Jason! We were on a ridge a few miles from where you and I hunted caribou in 2015. There were 4 guys hunting where you and I did, but they came out a few days early when the moose weren't moving or coming to calls.

    2017 Moose and Caribou Hunt

Yea, he would have been a pretty simple stalk and shot, if not for the guide requirement (sigh). I used to see some black bears in the 40 Mile country, but none the past several years - too many grizzlies around I guess.

    2017 Moose and Caribou Hunt

We saw 8-10 bulls and about a dozen cows. The rut where we were started really late this year, and bulls were traveling together, and not responding to calls, up through the end of our hunt. Most were using a ridge across the river and about 2 miles away from us. We tried to think of a way to...

    2017 Moose and Caribou Hunt

Back in Maryland after another Alaska wilderness adventure – Alaska delivered as only Alaska can. Here is our gear load arriving on the ridgetop. While flying into camp, we saw a very large grizzly dragging another grizzly that it had killed – and we were reminded that out here, there is...

Transporting Moose Antlers and Hide from Alask to East Coast

Thanks - same guy that's going with me this year shot a nice caribou a few years back, we split the skull and had a cardboard box made to fit the antlers. Stuffed the box around the antlers with Styrofoam peanuts, and checked the bag on Alaska Airlines as oversize bag for $75. I don't think I...

Transporting Moose Antlers and Hide from Alask to East Coast

This questions is sent out to some of my previous hunt partners, as well as anyone else who has transported antlers/capes from Alaska to home... I've done a bunch of remote AK moose and caribou hunts, but have always given the antlers away and left most of the meat with my family up there. My...

    Moose & Caribou Combo

My best friend and I are doing a moose/caribou combo with 40 Mile this fall. It's his 4th Alaska hunt, he's bagged caribou previously but a moose is on his bucket list. I'll have both moose and bou tags, he's after moose only. Going in for 11 days, can't wait! Every remote Alaska hunt is the...

First Time AK DIY Hunt Looking for some Advice

You could hunt black bear form the road system no problem, quite a few places on the road system that have good bear habitat - Kenai Peninsula, Eureka, Talkeetna, Denali Highway are all road accessible, especially if you're willing to spot from near the road and hike after a bear if you see one...

First Time AK DIY Hunt Looking for some Advice

If I were doing Alaska DIY for the first time I would do black bear off the road system if you're set on going alone, caribou if you are set on fly-in (as Gary already said, lots of reputable air taxis won't drop a solo hunter, especially if you haven't done wilderness Alaska yet). Feel free to...

    Moose & Caribou Combo

Never been there. I have family in Alaska, so before/after my hunts I see my sisters and their families, and my cousins. I do realize that's an attraction for a lot of the hunters that visit Alaska tho. :)

    Moose & Caribou Combo

One other thought about driving up from Georgia - if you're going alone, that's a lot of miles in the vehicle, and several days to get tired, before you ever get to your hunting spot. Not to mention the chance of delays due to vehicle breakdown or hitting a moose while driving at night in...

    Moose & Caribou Combo

I can vouch for mixedbag as an Alaska hunt partner, great guy and good hunter! I saw that you're thinking about $5k as a baseline. May be doable, but wanted to provide you with some of the cost considerations that you will have to think about, depending on the type of hunt you select. here is...

    Alaska Caribou and maybe sheep..

The 40 Mile herd may be stable, but caribou are still caribou, and highly unpredictable. I've hunted caribou many times with 40 Mile, and have always been fortunate to harvest an animal. But some years we've seen hundreds of bou, and some years just a few dozen. Either way, 40 Mile is a safe...

    Alaska Caribou and maybe sheep..

You might be better off using Wright Air out of Fairbanks, very reputable transporter and have been doing this a long time. There are/were some good outfits flying people off the Dalton, but some of those have had hiccups the past few years due to trying to take too much business and having...

    2017 caribou trip

Great deal! Good luck, and happy to share info on gear and other stuff if you want to PM me (have been out with 40-Mile 5-6 times). The even better news is, you will now be a returning customer if you ever want to go again... :)
