Thanks guys. Yes bird numbers are still down but I saw more birds last year than I had in a couple years, and I can only hope that the population will take a pretty good jump after this year's mild winter. Hoping for that good hatch! I've talked to game and fish and they are hopeful for a 2 bird...
Thanks guys. It was a lot of fun. Had a guy from New York come and hunt with us to kill his first merriams. Me and him were the only two that tagged out, out of 5.....but everybody had shots .
We got to our destination mid day on Thursday. That night a few birds were put to bed but the next morning resulted in a lot of "so close". That evening everybody had a plan on where they wanted to be, and being that I've killed a few birds, I just wanted to stay out of everybody's way so I went...
Antelope in unit 93 is awesome. If you have a couple days you shouldn't have a problem finding that 80" goat.
I would hunt closer to big piney than la barge. The country gets more rugged. There are some good deer around la barge but not a whole lot of high alpine country. Most of it tops out at...
I research public land opportunities in new zealand from time to time and I haven't found anything. I was starting to think it wasn't possible. Glad there's at least a glimmer of hope!
Wow! Very nice! Now that illinois is done what are the next steps. I'm always looking for a midwest whitetail trip but you're right....figuring out the public land areas puts me into some sort of conniption fit.
Just look at the odds and apply for an area that gives you high odds or 100% odds. Sometimes there's units where a buck tag might only be a 60-70% draw but the doe tags are 100% , and that is a slam dunk for more meat and a great trip.
It's a crap shoot. Had 'em scream from September 1st through september 8th and then shut up for a couple weeks.
Had 'em not say a word until the 8th of September and then all hell broke loose and they bugled pretty good all the way through the end of season. It's flat out a guessing game.
When I was in this predicament I went with a German Wire-haired Pointer. Smaller than a lab although on the bigger end of "pointers". A lot calmer than most pointer breeds, and best of all no shedding! Although they will obviously still lose hair. Most of my bird hunting is waterfowl and I have...
Watch it Buzz ;)
To pick a place in Wyoming if I were to start brand new would be Sheridan (or one of the small towns up that way) . Sundance is also a great choice. Pinedale probably in the top 5. Living in Jackson I wouldn't do....but anywhere from La Barge on up to Hoback Junction I would.
My buddy is a nurse in Montana and loves it. He was born and raised in Wyoming and I don't think he'll ever move back. He's into snowboarding and stuff up there as well.
Another thing about Wyoming is there isn't a huge list of hospitals, and the ones there are you would be far fetched in...
haha well. Don't let my story take away from something you want to do. It really made me rethink what the hell I was doing but I still had a great time. Visited some awesome country, saw some great sites and was able to take a caribou. Some things are you just have to go do!
