I've been using 130 grain TSX BT for both elk and deer with my 270. I keep all shots within 300 yards, and ideally much closer. They seem to do a great job so far.
Here's a question that probably can't be answered: Where in the heck do I find more? I went hunting with 7 bullets this year, now...
‘Self Limiting’ is a biological term for an organism or colony which limits its own growth to ensure its survival.
You can also apply the term to conservation. Looking at wins over the last couple centuries - Setting aside lands we can’t develop, restricting year round unfettered access to...
Our season ended with 5/6 tags filled.
After I packed out my spike I threw on a pack frame and followed my dad up to his time proven spot - a high saddle, hard to access. He has a particular stump he stands at, at the edge of the timbered section, about 60 yds lower than the bare saddle. He...
Freezer was empty and I decided I was going to shoot the first bull I saw. 4 miles into a roadless area I got into a large herd, 20-30 I’m guessing. Bugling could be heard just below me, and getting closer. Watched a couple cows pass through an opening, then the spike came and without hesitation...
There are areas where old growth was much more common and dominant than it is now, and where fires were less prevalent. Portions of the PNW are a good example. I see plenty of huge old growth stumps with springboard notches on spawning surveys and fishing trips up and down the Oregon coast, and...
Thank you for your comments.
The goal, in my mind, is looking at the data and managing for the most elk, deer, cougars, wolves, etc possible, when possible. You will not necessarily see more elk by killing more wolves or cougars, so leaning on science based management is key.
Hope you are...
So is hunting merely another extraction industry only concerned about hunters bottom lines? Or is there a proud tradition of conservation which has evolved beyond huntable game?
Used to drink a lot of whisky but I completely switched over to Ciroc vodka. Distilled from grapes and runs through super clean, rarely a headache the next day.
Might reach 109 this Sunday in Northern Willamette valley, 3 consecutive days of 100+ weather

Guess what? We can work on multiple problems at once in this country. Phasing out lead ammo and making wind turbines better.

There is a short discussion on lead science and if I remember correctly it covers your turkey vulture question.

Otto, your links are heavily centered on lobby groups for the shooting industry, and less centered on research or substance. For example, the NRA and The National Shooting Sports Foundation (The gun industry’s largest lobbying group). From the latter:
“This is a policy that really isn’t...
I think there are some agendas thrown into it, I also think there is a lot of truth to it. I am willing to read any articles you post without judgement. I believe there was a meateater podcast on the topic and Jim Heffelfinger, who I enjoy listening to at times, went over the different scenarios...
When we first moved to our new property I found a local bluebird organization who was trying to preserve the local population. I had a representative out to our property and she gave me the run down about development, habitat, starlings, etc.
When starlings came up in conversation I mentioned...
Why couldn't we have adopted the declaration of independence in winter?
Why are we still excited about fireworks after age 7?
These are important questions I often think about.
