How are Montana state lands managed? In Oregon our state lands are managed primarily as 'working forests' which provide revenue for schools, etc. There is a monetized incentive to maximize extraction which results in a history of taking damn near every tree next to important salmon bearing...
I think grazing done correctly can be a good thing. I share the same frustrations as many of you since I have seen my share of overgrazed land and riparian damage on salmon streams.
This is an interesting 20 minute talk by an ecologist. He grew up loving wildlife and hating livestock. Now he...
Very interesting. Looking forward to future studies.
I’ve spent a couple decades chasing steelhead and Trout up and down the west coast. It didn’t take me long to get into conservation.
I really enjoyed ‘Salmon without Rivers’ by Jim Lichatowich. Also, ‘King of Fish’ by David Montgomery. In...
I really enjoy Simms. I have tried a few times to find alternatives but they always leak! Each time I went limping back to Simms! Record was a pair of Reddington wading pants which lasted 2 trips. I hike A LOT in the Simms and they really hold up, great warranty program as well.
I want to say I...
I hunted Owyhee last season - pretty country. Not a ton of deer around, you can find info on ODFW. A lot of land to explore and I’m sure there’s a few big ones in there. I tagged a smaller 4 pt 3rd day. If you are adventurous and like exploring some interesting land this would be a good place...
I think you might be right unfortunately.
There was an ODFW radio transmitter collar study on a mule deer population in Oregon and leading causes of mortality for female mule deer was predation (4.4%), human caused -mainly vehicle (3.8%), illegal harvest (3.1%).
Cant assume this is going on in...

Out-competing deer
While the public generally enjoys bountiful wildlife, there’s a downside to having an overabundance of elk, Brimeyer said.
“When you look at these winter ranges across...
In what way would it be better for the elk? Idaho recently had the second best stretch of elk harvest in the state's history and Wyoming is at or above MO for 29 of the state's 35 elk herds, both have had wolves for some time now. They are trying to decrease elk numbers according to WGFD...
How will the population growth be managed? High density living or further rural development?
The thing to keep an eye on is migration corridors and wintering habitat, especially for mule deer.
Anybody catch this eastman's video? I think we have a problem in this country - We want our mule deer...
TU is legit. Not litigation focused, instead they partner with all sorts of different user groups to help habitat, etc. I cannot even count how many projects they have had their hand in. Very impressed with them - I'm a life member. Plus-- they usually have a nice fly rod set up for life...
Assuming you are addressing my statement on conservation..
Conservation does not need to involve hunting and trapping. Yellowstone, Crater Lake, many other National parks, monuments, National Wildlife refuges are examples of this already in place. It should when possible.
Nonsense.
“Overwhelmingly, the evidence has led us to conclude that removal of the four lower Snake River dams is the single most important step we can take to recover abundant, fishable and harvestable Snake River salmon and steelhead. Dam removal, however, must be part of a comprehensive...
