The main point is, you're probably not going to get a better tag anytime soon than you could get right now. Maybe never. Pick a unit you could hunt every few years and use the points. There are only a couple states out there that I feel you need to or are better off going more than 5 years...

Curious why you guys did not get one when you saw them? Too far away? Did you see any good bulls? I've learned over the years that you better be ready to shoot a bull at last light WAY back from the truck if you want to seal the deal a lot of times. Sometimes it's hard to make the...
Thinking Beaverhead over by the ID border, but I can will be flexible. I'm sure there are a lot of elk down low, but not sure those are the ones I'm looking for. I already have a good 300" archery bull this year so it's as much about spending time in the mountains as anything else. I haven't...
Going to head back over for a few days next week. I know the general area I'm going to focus on, but not sure how much snow is up high so I'm a little unsure where I'll be able to get into to. How much snow is up at 8000ft and above right now? I'm still hoping to get up pretty high looking for a...

I hunted 23 a while back. I took an ok 6 point during archery. You'll be hunting elk right on private property lines. I'd never want to do it during rifle season. Like most units where there is lot's of private property escapement, there are some good bulls. But... they did...
From experience... you can get a good tag, better than general with 6 points. Like everyone else you'll have to figure out where that is, but if you figure out what units you can draw right at that point level you'll be good.
I always fire up my jet boil and make coffee and oatmeal in my tent vestibule first thing and get dressed while it's going. You'd be amazed at the amount of warmth you can get going really quickly with such a little heat source. Makes all the differnce for me.
That can be quite true, but I would never go back to an area that I did not shoot, or at least have a chance to shoot a bull the 1st year. There are just too many great hunting spots that you can find elk right out of the gate with research and some hard work, to spend years searching a spot...
Headed back to MT tomorrow to hopefully close out my season. Even if they are not still rutting hard I'm always excited to get into elk country. It's been a long season already with my son starting to archery hunt this year. 700 miles one way to hunt elk for a few days is always worth it!
I have both and I will say I never turned on my GPS this year. The display quality is just so much better on the phone and as stated above the waypoints go back and forth between my laptop/online maps and my phone with seemlessly.
The only two drawbacks using the phone are:
1. Battery life. If...

Looks like another couple days of snow this week. The spot I'm thinking about is in that 5000ft range. We'll see. I'm always happy to be out elk hunting.
I was only able to hunt MT for a couple days Mid-Sept do to some physical issues with my dad, then all the snow where we had moved to. I did come back to OR and shoot a nice bull so all was not lost. I have the itch to get back over there for the last week of the archery season and give it a go...
