11 points won't draw 40 anyway. Last year 1 out of 11 guys drew with 11 points. It will take at least 12 this year. I'm also in no mans land. If CO averaged points I would share 1/2 of mine with my son. As it is, I guess I won't be hunting elk in CO for a while.
Didn't realize that. I bought my teenage son points last year. He will not be putting in for a general tag this year. So he will lose his pref point? Can he buy another one this summer and stay at 1 point?
Without saying I disagree with someone specifically, there is no reason to ever call to a bull until you have to. Meaning if you can kill a bull without him ever knowing you're there that is ALWAYS the best bet, and will most often give you a better shot. You can always start calling if you have...
The WY F&G has that info. FYI the elk in 27 will be way up high and it's a thick jungle of beattle kill blow down now. Yes, I think most people are looking to burn 4-7 points on anything they can draw now, but having hunted general twice myself, I feel like I can get a better bull on a general...
I've hunted it. There are elk, but it's not a great hunt and not many mature bulls. Even though it looks like tons of public land, that's not where most of the elk are. Read to WY fish and game info on access. That's why its flagged as a unit with difficult access. My son could draw with his...
I have hunted OR, UT, AZ, WY, MT, NV, CO, WA. There are a couple like ID and NM I have not, but I feel like I have a pretty broad perspective. I don't think you can compare apples to apples. Each state has it's own plusses and minus. If you're strictly talking about the size of bulls I think...
My son had a unit 40 deer tag this year. I wanted to take a look at it for elk. I was not a fan of the private land issues. Yes, there are animals there and yes they are on and off public land depending on many factors, but watching animals on private waiting for them to jump a fence is not...
There is no "right" answer to your question. A TON of huge bulls get killed around the 10th of Sept. Anytime from there to the middle of Oct. can have magic days depending on a lot of factors out of your control. Pick the dates that work best for you and go get them. Too many guys get hung up on...
Why on earth would you want to start discussing specific locations/drainages on a public forum? Do you realize that this info lives for forever? Try doing some searches for people that have hunted the area and start private conversations. NOT PUBLIC ones for everyone to read. You're just going...
That was not my experience, but I know the late 27 tag has a lot of tags compared to others. Not sure about 1. I packed in a couple miles into really rough country the day before the opener, froze my tail off that night and was run over by horse guys in the dark the next morning. They ended up...
I hunted 27 late a few years ago and learned why the harvest rates are so high. Most of the guys there, especially the residents shoot the first bull they see. Including spikes. Those late hunts are viewed more as meat hunts. I was there for something 340" or above and was able to locate some...
As said above, it's a good time to see and maybe hear elk, but a hard time to kill a big bull. I shoot big bulls every year mid Sept, but last year was my first time archery hunting in Oct. I went to Montana the last week of the season. Lots of elk, but as said they were herded up and there was...
With all the great UL shelters out there these days I'd never consider a bivy sack. I usually spend 3-4 weeks a fall in the back country and one thing that can't be overlooked is your rest! Having more room, comfort, shelter from the weather.... for a pound or 2 more weight is an absolute no...
BrentD, Sounds like you have a plan. I've spent time in that unit. We killed a couple of the best bulls out of there according to the game and fish checkers. I'll leave it at this... it's not a great area for good bulls... the ones that are there take some serious work. I'm not going to tell you...
Be prepared to hike some miles around private if you're looking at 25. Unless there is some weather you won't find many elk in the low country in 27 and the high country is too thick to rifle hunt for me. No glassing. Do you guys have more than 5 points? I drew that tag once with 2 points, which...
It may or may not be a factor in elk behavior, but it is the last factor I would consider. We've killed some great bulls during the full moon and I've seen some of the hottest rutting action during the full moon.
There are a lot more than one way to skin a cat and if you want to be successful...
I have hunted it as well as another LE unit in WY and two differnt general areas. My 2 cents is it "can be" a decent meat hunt, but not a good hunt for a quality bulls or a rut hunt. The size of the bulls is WAY smaller than the other central WY LE hunt I was on and a lot smaller than the two...
I don't think you can expect "a good chance" at a 350" bull in any of those units except "maybe" on a good private ranch. Sure, they all have bulls that size, but expecting to have a good chance at one is not very realistc. WY ain't AZ or UT. It's a great state for OK to good bulls, but not a...
For reference, I could not get away from hunters last year in multiple MT archery general units and I don't hunt near roads. In 2 general archery seasons in WY I've only seen 1 other hunter. Maybe it was just where I hunted in WY, but MT seemed much more crowded to me.
