Yes, it's a grade 5 curly maple. Not a lot of the original Hawken rifles had such fancy wood but some of them did if the customer wanted to pay for it.
I've always been a plain walnut kind of guy but I thought i'd try some fancy maple. It does give the gun a nice look.
I loved hunting with a lever 30-30 with open sights for elk and muley's in timber. I gave it up when I got into traditional muzzleloader hunting. I always kept my shots under 75 yds just like with the muzzleloader.
I used the 170gr Partition.
There was a 45% chance I could have got the buck tag with zero points. I had 2 points so I had to waste them to get the tag.
Getting it was no surprise. It was guaranteed with 2 points.
One way might be if you have points. They should go away if you get your 1st pick.
