The Big Snip - How bad is it?

I got to do it twice, the first one didn't take. First one, I came down with Giardiasis two days later. NOT fun. Second one, I think the doc held some part of the anatomy down with his knee. Took ten days or so to not walk funny. David NM

NM Unit 50 Late season Cow hunt

"Yessir been reading some folks tend to take vehicles where they can and shouldn't." That level of understatement is almost English humor. ATVs are stinking everywhere if the ground is near to flat, like 50. A good friend worked his butt off in 50 - one heck of a good hunter, went to extremes...

    Collective wisdom about hunting NM

Don't get fooled. Draw odds are not the greatest, and of the 94% of the tags that go to residents, almost half end up in the hands of Nonresidents via landowner tag sales. Reading above, didn't realize that a NR can buy land and get landowner tags. If true, that kinda sucks. David NM

    5 shots is a waste..

Once one arrives at a load, and considers the scope zeroed, there should be a lot of range time. Now the real world will creep in, if we are paying attention. I would hope there would be a lot of confirmation, consternation, or confusion, depending on whether or not those three and five shot...

    5 shots is a waste..

We don't do statistics, we shoot. With my basic statistical understanding, neither 3 or 5 shots is a very conclusive answer from a statistical perspective. Working on sighting in, 3 is likely enough for scope movement, but as one gets closer, more rounds are needed for precision, less if...

    Davis Tent

I may be captain obvious, but be sure you use a footprint of some kind even with a floor. I never thought about a floor in my tent, just put down a painter's tarp or similar. Then I moved from Oregon to NM, where we have things that crawl and slither.... I haven't slept on the ground once...

    Found One….#1 that is

I have been blessed with an 1885, in 38-55, from my father-in-law's estate. Sure looking forward to shooting it. David NM

    Lost our buddy-UPDATE

Sorry for your loss. We have two that are on the downhill direction, has not been a happy day here for a while. Not designer dog folks, we are 100% Airedale Terrier folks. We can tell you all about them, but know little to nothing on the designer dogs. David NM

Montana Fentanyl and Meth. Mexican Drug Cartel Focus.

Well, here in NM growing it for personal use is legal. You can legally grow a lot. And do you think the police spend any time monitoring what people grow in their yards? No bang for that buck. Now, here we have the shops and commercial growers whining to the State, to legislate how many and...

.54 caliber patched round ball elk load?

Because getting 2000 fps with only 100gr of 1.5f black powder on a patched round ball appears to potentially violate physics, that's all.

.54 caliber patched round ball elk load?

Your rifle is what we would probably call an "anomaly" particularly if you compare with the values above. David NM

.54 caliber patched round ball elk load?

I hope you have a good recoil pad. Those 385 grain bullets push back. Ima wimp. David NM

    Burn boss indicted

Family member is a crew manager (manages several fire crews). To hear him describe the way burns are scheduled, crewed, and managed from way up high on the ladder, it's a wonder we haven't burnt down all the woods. David NM

.54 caliber patched round ball elk load?

Never have heard of a patched round ball, pure lead, fragmenting due to excessive velocity. Not much in the way of expansion happening, either, though the ball will deform particularly if it hits bone. I can always be wrong (in fact, am practiced at it), but I don't think I am in this case...

.54 caliber patched round ball elk load?

I think 75 yards is a good limit, 100 max. Elk aren't bulletproof, but sometimes it seems that way. David NM

.54 caliber patched round ball elk load?

Yep, dryballing is always fun - I actually have a trophy for excelling at such during the Oregon State ML Competition years ago. You can always remove the nipple and trinkle some powder in the hole, replace the nipple, and kinda poot the ball out of the barrel. If you move beyond the 100 grain...

    New Mexico elk hunting

Consider if you would help your buddy hunt or vice versa if there were only one tag - you might consider putting in separately, instead of as a party. Spread the wealth, so to speak. This is what my wife and I do, so in theory we have increased the chances of at least one of us getting to...

Trick to landing.fish on tiny flies

Be sure the hooks are sharp, so you are sure they penetrate. Concentrate on keeping the rod tip high, I have to remind myself to do that. But take heart, 20's aren't that small! Biggest trout I ever caught was on the San Juan on a 28 - I love to get to fish with 16s or 18s on other rivers. I...
