SB 245 has changed!!! The sponsor has added an amendment stating "The department may not limit the number of licenses or permits in a hunting district for a population of elk, deer, or antelope that remains above the sustainable population number".
This is another attempt to create unlimited...
A big part of the problem is that the dept has chosen to toss out the 2004 Elk Management plan. To my knowledge, there is no effort being made to put together a new elk management plan. How can the agency make intelligent decisions or manage our wildlife without a plan to follow??

I was at the hearing for SB 154, the hunter orange bill, so did not actually sit in on SB 245 yesterday. Was told as I left, by a Dept. official, that they were going to support SB 245. Trying to verify if they did so. If true, it opens up a whole new set of questions. Will post when I find...

Here is the problem I have with SB 245. It ignores the 2004 Montana Elk Management Plan, which is the last time the FWP developed a Elk Plan. Here is the link to the 400 page document: http://fwpiis.mt.gov/content/getItem.aspx?id=31438
On page 55, #5 of that plan it states:

I have owned a savage 243 for 35+ years and have always used Hornady 100 gr interlock bullets with 36.5 grs. of IMR 4895. It is a very accurate and deadly load. My guess is that 30+ deer and antelope have dropped to this combo and have never lost an animal with this gun. Longest confirmed...
I have used 160 gr. nosler partitiion in my various 7 mm's for 35+ years and have always liked how they perform. I use 61.5 to 63 grains(depending on the gun) of IMR 4831 powder with CCI 250 primers. Comes out at about 3000 FPS. Have killed two shiras moose with this load ( one at app. 300...
Very interesting and informative thread. From the comments it becomes apparent that BM properties come in all different colors, some good and some bad. No one wants to throw the baby out with the bathwater, but tweaking the program to address some of its flaws would be a very good thing...
Here is the email that MSA sent out.
Rep. Kelly Flynn has a potential bill draft that would create a “Block Management Stamp”. The specifics have not yet been finalized but initially he is thinking that it would be an opt out program so that those not wishing to hunt on Block Management...
This is a hunter attitude problem and more wardens will not necessarily solve all the issues. Restricting hunter opportunity seems counter productive for the future of hunting. Hunters need to step up and report violations when they see them. We should not confront violators as then we might...
Two thoughts, first we need to increase the trespassing fines for intentional trespass where an animal is actually killed. Make it $1000 or more and maybe that would deter some people.
Second, I saw where Wyoming has a rule on the Grand Teton elk hunt that you cannot fire more than one shot...
Since a first trespassing offense is only a $135? fine, it is not much of a deterrent. Need to have harsher penalties for premeditated trespassing and poaching. Anyone leaving game to rot should be hung up by their thumbs or other body parts.
We generally only hear about the incidents that are put in the paper but there are lots more that never get in the papers. It is up to us as hunters to protect our sport and the resource.
This article was published in the Billings Gazette today.
Guest opinion: Hunters, step up to report thieves who take away from our sport
This spike bull, another spike and a cow elk were all found shot and left to waste on a Block Management Area near Whitehall.

Been following this thread with great interest. I have a simple question: How many of the Montana residents who have posted on this thread plan on writing Letters to the Editor on this subject, or calling their local legislators, or telling their friends what is going on, or will get involved...
