First thing I can think of is try to make sure you're hunting in an area where there are turkeys. I haven't hunted turkeys in Wyo, but did in Colo. when I lived there. One of the biggest challenges was just finding an area with a huntable population.
Pretty limited public DIY opportunities in this part of NC. I just got out of a club in Washington Co. (one of the better eastern NC counties for bear) where I never saw a bear while stand hunting timber company land in 5 seasons. The adjoining dog hunting club normally killed 10-15 a season.
OK, the reason I asked is because a few years ago my wife and I heard a presentation by the USFW supervisor at Pocosin refuge where she stated that they used birdshot to run the bears away from their baited traps around Pungo lake where they were catching waterfowl for tagging.
