Sleeping Bag recommendations for CO/WY/ID October Elk Hunts

There is a lot to consider in my opinion. What will the shelter consist of? Do you sleep hot or cold? Backpack in or camp at the truck? I would agree with 20 degrees the outside temp but you know you. It would suck to buy a bag and then be 5 miles from the truck and freeze your butt off...

    Indiana gun opener

So I had a great hunt down in JP. Found a bunch of scrapes and rubs. Passed a small 6 pointer at 20 yards around 10am cruising through the woods. I was fortunate enough to take a doe and 5 pointer in the reduction zone last week. I decided to check a lake out and when I got to it was...

Looking for a good deer/elk knife

This is all I use anymore. Handmade by me. 8670 steel and micarta handle. Full tang. Yes I may be a bit biased but I have made/sold 14-15 of these in the last two years for customers all over the country. Not one negative review or complaint. Lightweight and packs easily. So far they...

    Tree Saddles. Thoughts, Tips, Stories?

This thread is perfectly timed for me. I have never ran one, currently I use a muddy hang on with muddy sticks. I set the stand, then take three sticks with off the tree for security purposes. Yeah I have to pack em in and out but it isn't that bad. Now my nephew uses a saddle and loves it...

    Indiana deer hunting.

For sure. I used to hunt a 1000 acre public area around Kansas City that was walk in only and it held some bruisers as I have the sheds, one a true 165-170 depending on spread. Seeings how JP is 9x bigger I am sure they are in there.

    Indiana deer hunting.

Been hunting behind the house on and off. When the acorns were falling we had deer in the yard almost every day, but I did not hunt due to the heat. Next year I will have a cooler or an old fridge set up so I won't have to worry. I have passed a few button bucks up and had a really nice...

    The Witching Hour

Mountain whitetails is a hunt I would really like to go on. I swear back in 2002 I was up above edwards CO mulie hunting and I swear to god a whitetail walked by at 50 yards. Had to rub my eyes and do a double take.

    Teach me about pants....

I have really come to like my Duluth Firehose cargo pants. Water resistant yes, burr proof hell yes, big pockets for hats, gloves, etc.. yes. Now they are not the warmest but with some Merlino wool underneath they are quite nice. Only downside is they are heavy. Walking around in the...

    Kids and hunting

Going through this currently. We have 4 daughters ( 6,8,12,14). The 14 year old has been hunting for 5 years now. She has never taken an animal, although she has been on the scope, safety off, animals in front of her ready to squeeze but always there is an issue. She is a great shot. I just...

    A deer hanging in camp

Amazing hunt. I was/am an adult onset hunter back in 1993 at the age of 19. I have since passed my love of it down to our 4 daughters. Hopefully some day they take the old man out and let me sit with one of my model 70's. That 95 gr BT is amazing in the .243.

    .44 mag ammo for deer

I am actually headed to the range in a bit to test some Montana Bullets in my 1894 Marlin Saddlering for here in Indiana. Unique is what I have so that is what I am using. 260gr WFNGC. Ranges won't be past 50 yards so I am not running them to hard.

    Sciatica

Stretch stretch and stretch some more. If I even feel a bit of tension or tightness ( sitting in a treestand or sporting event stands) I stretch the minute I get home. Mine took 8 months to go away. Lost 10 pounds too so that might have helped as well. I forgot. Iced my lower back pretty...

    now considered useless traits

yep sure is! We fished Pelee island before it was cool. Spent a lot of time out at West, East, and Middle Sister. I still have the old map we used out in the shop.

    now considered useless traits

Being able to read a non digital caliper. Or any non digital instrument for that matter. Reading the clouds in the distance when on the lake or in the wild. Now we just open our smart phones for a satellite radar pic. Using a nautical map and be able to triangulate where you were then...
