I live in NYS and finding 54 cal stuff was always a problem! For every 25 boxes of 50 cal bullets, you might find one in 54. I finally gave up and bought a 50. Sold off my TC Firehawk in 54. Now have a TC Triumph in 50 and a newer Vortek Strikefire, also in 50.
My favorite is the 90% jacket so far. However, while I also have the Kelvin and Stratus, they are colder weather affairs. I have worn the 90% in Co elk hunting in early Sept, spring time turkey hunting, hunting whitetails at home, snow tracking in NYS Adirondacks, etc. It is my go-to jacket...
I live in NYS and got a bunch of photos using a camera filter, a Nikon D7000 body, a 300mm f4 Nikon lens, a 2x teleconverter and a good tripod! It was a warm day. While we only got 70% of totality, it cooled things about 5 deg. or more and things had a sort of funky light.
I would think your concern is with the length of pull/ The LOP is going to be the same as other rifles; about 13 1/2". If you have other rifles that you own, measure from the trigger to the buttstock to get their LOP. If the standard LOP fits you, then I wouldn't be afraid to get one.
A friend years ago used a Hornady Great Plains hollow point MZ bullet, 50 cal 250 grains. 2 of them fragmented and didn't a) break the neck or 2) penetrate the shoulder. Yes, angle and shot placement were issues. So, I recommend staying away from anything with a hollow point.
I have used...
I've never owned Schnees. But, I own about 5 pairs of Lacrosse Burly rubber boots with air bob soles in various stages of wear, including one torn and repaired with duct tape and even a brand new pair still in the box. I love my Lacrosse! :)
Superb writing. Great hunt. Great write-up.... Maybe you have a different calling Randy!

In the olden days when bows had much more hand shock than they do today, I always preferred a 2 piece. The longer distance between the hood & holder meant no arrow vibration noise when the bow was shot. However, today's bows have negligible hand shock so that reason no longer exists.
I would...
Yes, AR's are loud! I had a S&W 223 that was even louder than my Rock River 6.8 SPC! I swear it seemed like the S&W action cycled faster and sound was coming out of the ejection port! Hearing protection is a MUST when target shooting. For deer hunting (my 6.8), I don't worry about it. But...
Sorry to hear.... Cherish the memories, it keeps them alive....
I lost my dad in 2004 and my mom in early 2015. I know where you are coming from and send my sincerest sympathies....
