I think it all comes down to what species you are hunting and what your goals are. For elk and mule deer I think the Leupold’s would be fine for most hunts. If you want to hunt Coues deer or someplace like Nevada for mule deer where you may need to pick apart every shadow then the Swaro’s are...
I think there is a bait and switch here as well. If this was really about elk numbers on private ground the proposed B-13 license would be antlerless only on the landowners deeded property. From my point of view this bull really has a similar objective to SB 143. Create a stable pile of NR tags...
I agree wholeheartedly with what JLS posted to start this thread. I posted a version of my comments below on goHunt in reference to the recent Wyoming bill to reduce NR opportunity.
The NA model relies on a broad base of public support. All I hear these days from residents is “me, me, me”...
Unfortunately there were a lot of things that were not covered by the opposition because the list of problems with this bill is nearly endless. I thought Gerald in particular did a nice job tying together his personal story with the numbers to illustrate how stupid the proposal was, but almost...
My understanding from Randy is that “transferable tags” suggest that the landowner has an ownership claim to wildlife on their property whereas “sponsored tags” just give landowners a preference.
Randy explained it well earlier in the thread. Here is the basic difference:
Transferable tag: The state gives the tags to the landowner to sell or transfer
Sponsored tag: The landowner sponsors a hunter to buy a tag from the state.
The end result is basically the same in this case. It is my...
Hank clearly isn’t a politician. It was weird and refreshing to see him actually give a straight up answer to a question that was pretty damning to his cause. “No” pretty much said it all. He probably needs to sit down with Mac Minard to get some lessons on evasion. I thought Mac’s chat with...
Waited 2.5 hrs, inconvenienced my family to testify and was immediately shut out for being a NR despite having two valid points to make that had not been covered.
1: the bill does open the door to use of the B-13 license on public land contrary to what the gentleman from FWP said. See the end...
Just further proof of the real motivation behind stacking the FWP commission with four agricultural producers. We need to keep opposing that bill strongly too. If you look at landowner tag prices in NM it is easy to see these MT sponsored tags being worth serious money. Not to mention the fact...
That is fair enough. Your experience in politics gives you a clearer perspective on these issues and the realities of the Montana legislature than my lack there of.
Thank you Ben. I signed up on Saturday. The comment about Galt is clearly counterproductive but frankly I don’t believe a person’s position brings with it any inherent respect. A leader earns that respect through the actions they take and the example they set.
They won’t need to amend the bill to make the the tags unit wide because the bill gives the FW Commission the ability to do that...the same commission they are also trying to stuff with a veto proof majority of agricultural producers. As you point out it is not hard to connect the dots. Talk...
Randy, Nick, Ben,
I will be testifying remotely again tomorrow against this bill. Based on your recent posts it is clear that I have misinterpreted some of the language of the bill or failed to distinguish the legal subtleties between sponsored and transferable tags. Having said that what do...
The major issue with this bill is that it guarantees a tiny fraction of Montanans a majority on the commission at the expense of everyone else. Go to the UPOM website and look at their priorities and keep in mind that the FWC regulates more than hunting. Not all landowners are sportsmen, not...
I shot an antelope buck and mule deer this year with the Barnes 175 LRX, both at 250.yds. The exit hole on the antelope was almost the size of a baseball. I think I hit the far rib square on. Both animals didn’t make it 30 yds. Both good hits behind the shoulder. I love my flatirons and taco...
