Rent a pair of Swaros from Todd at optics4rent and try them out beside yours in the field. He is easy to work with. I rented a pair of SLC 15s from him the first time I hunted Coues. That put me on the path to upgrading.
If you live in Texas I am pretty sure that Nilgai have intramuscular fat. They are in the bovine family ( like cows) not the cervid family (deer, elk, etc).
Upgrade the Binos or buy a good pair of 15s. I ran vortex diamondback binos and an older leupold mark 3(?) 12-40x spotter for a while. Found a great deal on a pair of used Swaro ELs 10x42 and haven’t used the spotting scope since. I can see things better at 10x than I can at any setting on the...
Only other thing to consider is that they typically start dropping their horns at the end of October. I shot one two years ago in MT on November 4 and probably half the bucks in the group were missing one or both horns. If you are looking for the most opportunity I would go on the earlier side.
Just give them a call. The 55 gallon drum was facetious but if they hear it from enough folks maybe it will happen. The lefty market is brutal. I’ve been trying to get my hands on the savage 110 timberline in 6.5 cm for my kid because of the accustock and the shorter threaded barrel, but they...
I called them a couple weeks ago about something else and inquired about an LH rifle. The fellow I talked to said they would make one once they filled up a 55 gal drum with request sheets and they weren’t there yet. He said their engineers keep telling them that it is not just a matter of...
I have the Havak Element with a Swaro z5 3.5-18 on top in 6.5 PRC. I’m honestly kind of embarrassed how nice it is every time I take it out. Shoots better than I can, super light, trigger is excellent, and I’ve found thoughtful details in the stock (QD mounts, premolded for a second insert) that...
I have a Silk 634 and Sirui VA-5 head. Light, strong and stable. We run an ATX 85 on it all the time. We are primarily backpack hunting and it is perfect. I have a bigger Gitzo that stays in the truck but it weighs a ton. A big heavy tripod would be easy to find on Craigslist if you are near...
If you are committed to the “leg steak” I would think about using a sawzall with one of those long carbide demolition blades. You could probably throw the blade in the dishwasher and the sawzall would clean up pretty quickly. I’ve used a handsaw on shanks for osso buco style cuts and it is...
Oh yeah. He’s got the passion. Shot his first duck last year (8 years old)with a little 410 and he’s been talking about this season since Christmas. Crazy part was when an eagle came to steal his bird. We were shouting and high fiving when I saw the eagle heading straight for the bird. You’ve...
Thanks Nick. I had not heard the geese down wind of the ducks. Makes a lot of sense though. I assume the real ducks would freak out if the geese flew over their heads.
I am looking to add 6-10 high quality floating goose decoys to my setup and looking for a recommendation. I primarily hunt small marshes and rivers in the Northeast. Our geese are heavily pressured and typically in flocks of 4-20. I lean towards the buy nice not twice mentality and take care of...
