Amidst the current assault there is a good bill, SB 256, headed to the Senate Judiciary Committee tomorrow that needs our support. It would make it a crime to block public access to public lands by erecting gates and such. Take a look and send some letters of support. It is the rare bill that...

I could use an explanation of the RMEF position (or lack there of) as well. I imagine they get good advertising revenue from outfitters and they don’t want to piss off landowners with whom they negotiate purchases and access agreements, but this bill is a disaster for elk and public land...
I just called RMEF headquarters and the woman answering the phone said she hadn’t heard about the issue yet from phone calls or correspondence she had received. Let’s start the same outreach that helped turn the ship on 143. I’ve e-mailed the committee and Kassmier directly as well and reached...
Thanks Ben. Just to clarify, is it something that we should pursue aggressively or something with so little support from other members that it is little more than a pr statement the rep can use to show his constituents that he stood up for the 2nd amendment? Given the barrage of bills coming...

Has anyone started a thread on HJ5?
I pulled a P-R info sheet off the legislative site. MT receives roughly $29M from PR every year. That provides nearly 30% of the FWP budget according to the 2019 budget numbers. MT benefits disproportionately because of its big land area and high hunter...
The loss of preference point fees in the original bill was a huge offset from Ellsworths claimed $200 net gain. I would need someone to run the actual numbers for me but somewhere between 3-4 preference points the original bill would have become a net loss since they were giving away 65% of the...
I found it particularly ironic when Senator Hinebaugh stated that he came to Helena to reduce bureaucracy as he is pushing a bill that would increase it.
From my understanding, the amendment creates an early draw that would be completed by Jan 15 with 40% of the total tags (those previously guaranteed outfitter tags). It will cost either $200 or $300 more and all of that increase will go to habitat montana.
I am currently listening to Randy’s discussion with Mac on Hunttalk and wanted to emphasize one point:
MOGA paints the preference point system as an obstacle for their clients because it is “so complicated”. Doesn’t that make it a business opportunity for outfitters in this state? “The...
The draft language is so simple and broad it is clear that no one put any actual thought into the implications of the bill. Can you imagine the Breaks in 2022 if this actually goes through? It would be a massacre the opening week of rifle season. It would also have no impact on private land...

Here is the link to the draft text. While Elk are the most obvious target this could effect every game species as written.

Above is the link to the petition circulating against SB 143. I thought I would share it again to put it in front of more eyes. From what I’ve read, the rapid response against the proposed bear hunting ban in CA helped kill it immediately. This petition is just one...
I touched on this back in post 768, but I would argue that the most vibrant and innovative outfitting community is in Arizona. Outfitters get no special consideration, Tag numbers are tiny compared to MT, draw odds are grim for residents and non-residents, competition is fierce and most of the...
