Why all the fuss about snake boots?

I realize this is an old thread, but I look at wearing my snake gaiters the same as wearing my seatbelt. I likely won’t need it, but I will be glad I’m wearing it if I do. I hunt the mountains of the southern Appalachians. All we have up here are timber rattlers and copperheads, but there are...

    Yet Another Medical Issue

I recently turned 60 and cut most carbs from my diet almost a year ago. I’ve had arthritis in my low back for years from a couple of old injuries. I’m not completely pain free, but have had a noticeable improvement to the point where I can physically do everything I could 20 years ago. Check...

    Sleeping pad suggestions?

I’ve only got a few overnights on my Big Agnes Rapide, but so far so good, and it is incredibly comfortable for a side sleeper. It got down to 17 degrees on my last overnight a few weeks ago, and I was toasty in my 20 degree bag. At 60 comfort is key.

Black Bear v. Grizzly (Brown) Quiz

I was in the half of the class that made the top half possible. We would celebrate a strong C+. :)

    Muzzleloader Pig

Perfect eating size hog! Our small game season stays open until February 28 here in Georgia. I will start hunting hogs in the next couple of weeks with my muzzleloader up in the mountains of North Georgia on national forest. Some of the hogs that live way up in the mountains get huge since...

What to do with a Hog?

I smoked a hindquarter last Sunday from a small 100lb sow I shot the week before in the north Georgia mountains. They are so much leaner than domestic pork that I never have much luck getting the meat to pull, but if you like sliced pork it is as good as any anywhere.

    Rattlesnakes while hunting

The only venomous snakes I have seen in the North GA mountains are Copperheads and Timber Rattlesnakes. The buck berry and blue berry bushes are so thick here that it’s almost impossible to watch where You step so the turtleskins gaiters go on every time.

    S. Dakota Hunter's Body Found

Full disclosure, I have not used another satellite communicator before. The Zoleo seems to work well. There has been once or twice that my text message to a contact was delayed, but I believe that was because I was under a very thick canopy of trees. Depending on where I am in the mountains, it...

    Hog / Boar in Tennessee

Not sure what part of Tennessee you are located in, but if you are willing to head south a little bit into the north Georgia mountains we are covered up with them. Chattahoochee national Forest is almost 800,000 acres of public land and there are plenty of pigs to hunt, and lots of big ones...

    Ford 3.5L EcoBoost

I purchased a 2017 Expedition EL with 3.5L EcoBoost. I added a 3/2 leveling kit for additional clearance and 35” tires. My gas mileage suffered, but I am still averaging 15mpg around town If I take it easy on the accelerator which is easier said than done since it’s so quick off the line...

    S. Dakota Hunter's Body Found

I recently purchased The Zoleo Satellite Communicator. I use onXmap on my phone so I was mainly interested in something that would allow me to keep in touch with my wife when I am out of cell range hunting National Forest in the Appalachian Mountains. The Zoleo is a great value if you don’t...

Best Muzzleloader Bullet for Bull Elk?

Another vote for Barnes T-EZ. I shoot the 250 grain bullet with two 50 grn White Hot Pellets. I haven’t shot Elk, but have had great results on some huge 300 spots plus pound hogs. Super accurate as well. First three shots are usually touching at 100 yds off a bench.

    Horseback Elk Hunting

My first Elk hunt in the early 90s. A buddy invited me to join he and his father and brother on an Archery elk hunt near Meeker CO. We rented horses to get us about 9 miles back and after arriving mid afternoon we set up camp on a beautiful knob that had a great glassing spot of the entire...

Story of my first Elk (CO 1st Rifle 2019)

Congrats again Herman! Enjoyed the story even more here with the extra detail. I hope we get to cross paths chasing bear in our little mountains of North GA.

2018 bear back from the tannery

That looks great. I had my bear from last fall done without head and feet to use as a throw. It turned out nice, but I am thinking about keeping head/feet on for the next one.

    Bear stalking

Here in the mountains of North Georgia we only have a fall season with no bating allowed. There is no way to spot bear from a distance since the woods are so dense with trees. Most guys will wait on one to come past just as you would for whitetail, but I have a few buddy’s who like to stalk...

    Utah Spring Bear Hunt

Great hunt recap. Enjoyed the pics. Hunting bear with dogs will be legal for the first time this fall here in Georgia on a couple of WMAs on a trial basis. Should be interesting.

Big and Juicy Spring Bear Hunt

Really enjoyed the pics. Makes me want to buy a decent camera...and yes, the donuts have to be powdered unless you can find Krispy Kreme. Then it’s glazed donuts all day long.

Horn Hunter Main Beam XL. SOLD!

Empty Nesters getting ready to downsize and the wife says some stuff has to go. I jumped up to the Horn Hunter Full Curl Combo last year, so the Main Beam XL is just taking up space. New price of $115 TYD is a steal on a great pack. This pack is in very good condition, and is super versatile...
