    7mm HT vs. 35 Whelen

I really enjoy seeing the love the Whelen is getting. A lot of folks like to say it's a heavy brush gun, not good for distances over 100 yards.

    Kentucky Deadline Extended

Drawing will be posted next Saturday (5/13) at 9PM EST. I put my wife in after they extended the closing date, just to see what happens, and I'm pretty certain she will draw long before anyone on this site does. Sim, at least we don't have point creep here, so that's gotta make it better than...

I was wondering about that after I saw one of the LEAs being closed.

    7mm HT vs. 35 Whelen

Thanks for the advice MK. From what I can tell, grizzly encounters are not as high in the Lewis and Clark as , so maybe I am over thinking the bear thing. And who knows, I love both rifles and have high confidence in them, so I may bring both and see what the conditions dictate. I just don't...

Not sure why the decrease. It's listed in the metrics for 2016 Kentucky Elk Report though. Herd is holding steady at about 11,000 animals.

    7mm HT vs. 35 Whelen

I have not tried the LRX, but based on the additional length, I'm not sure if the loss of powder capacity would be improved by the better bc and additional weight in a shorter barreled rifle taking shots under 300 yards. But I'll definitely grab a box in my next order just to play with, who...

    Kentucky Deadline Extended

Last year's was 1/764, but with 200 less permits all together I'm sure it's much worse this year.

Those odds last year for nonresident was up to 1/137. You don't even want to know firearms bull odds.

    Kentucky Deadline Extended

Looks about that way. Even as a resident you have less than a 1% chance at a firearms bull tag. So don't feel too bad.

    Kentucky Deadline Extended

Last minute screw up with the computer systems from my understanding. Pretty low odds of drawing this year though. I think they dropped from around 900 tags to 700 tags.

    7mm HT vs. 35 Whelen

Mkotur, I really have no desire to wound an elk, however I know that life happens and excitement, or a sudden gust of wind can turn a great shot into a gut shot, and I've heard that elk can run quite a distance. Hence the fear that it could make it to private. I just want to be as ethical as...

    Kentucky Deadline Extended

For any of you westerners who want to donate to the Kentucky elk fund, the deadline to apply for the drawing has been extended to midnight, Wednesday, May 3.

    7mm HT vs. 35 Whelen

Drop for the 35 is about 16 inches at 300 yards.

    7mm HT vs. 35 Whelen

Hey guys I have both a 7mm HT and a 35 Whelen which I am considering to use for an elk hunt in 2018 in Montana (unless I draw in Kentucky this year). I hand load and have a Barnes TTSX load for each rifle 140 gr. For the 7mm and 200 gr. For the 35, which should perform well on elk out to about...

    Podcast References?

Does anyone keep a list of the books, articles, websites, and other podcasts that Big Fin talks about in the shows? I really want to check out a lot of the stuff he mentions but I drive most the time I am listening, so I can't catch all the info during an episode.

    Montana HD 413

Hey all, I am planning to try to get a general Elk/Deer combo tag for the 2018 hunting season. I have been trying to e-scout in advance to have some idea of where to go, as I have never hunted elk, or in Montana. Right now I am thinking unit HD 413 north of the little belt mountains, but still...

Yeah it is, I came for school and stayed. Once it gets warmer and dryer you may want to hike red river gorge to get some feel for rougher terrain.

Welcome to the forum and the podcast. It's pretty rare to see another Kentucky member! I have a similar training routine and it really livens up my workout. My only advice is don't listen to episode 52 (the one from SHOT Show) on the treadmill, you may fall off.
