It's crazy to me that he didn't just drop in his tracks, especially given a perfect heart shot. I mean yeah he didn't go far, heck he was a whole 70 yards away from me when he died, but why not 30 lol.
All my tags this year are muzzleloader tags. CO elk tag, CO Pronghorn buck & doe tag (https://www.hunttalk.com/threads/co-2023-muzzleloader-pronghorn-antelope-hunt.321262/), NM Mule Deer tag.
Today was the opener of the Colorado Muzzleloader Pronghorn season. This is only my 3rd ever Pronghorn hunt, all of which have been with the good ol' smoke pole. I made it out to the unit late yesterday evening, with only about 45 minutes to scout before sunset. I made the most of it and went to...
Weekend scouting recap:
Saturday and Sunday produced more rain for my region and snow about 9500'. Fall has most definitely set in! Saturday morning we spent the day getting family pictures with the changing leaves as our backdrop, this has become our family tradition. We didn't see much...
I've shot plenty of elk that never tipped over. I've shot many that just drop as well as some that have spun around, staggered and fell. The first bull I ever shot, I shot with a .308 at less than 50 yards. He gated himself, walked about 20 more yards layed down and died.
The first bull my...

Pre-Hunt scouting continued:
Now into September I placed my focus on the private property as I can access it daily if needed. I was hoping to pattern the elk that frequent the private property. In years past it was very easy to do, as this property is the only place I know that holds water...
Pre-Hunt scouting:
Welcome fellow hunt talk members! This thread will be my wife and I's elk hunt day by day Recap. It may include semi live recaps depending on the availability of cell service in our area. This year my wife and I were each lucky enough to end up with a cow tag, my wife also...
It was brutal! I had to pick that buck up over the fence and then walk all the way back to the truck! And then I could only get the truck within about 20 feet of the buck!
All joking aside I did more walking on my first stalk than I did on the successful one. It wasn't quite the adventure I had...
Welcome from Southern Colorado.
This is the right place to be indeed. As long as you are polite and contribute to conversations you will find what you need here.
Welcome!
Day 4 Recap and hunt wrap:
Day 4 of the hunt ended up being Tuesday of this week. I took a three day break to be there for my daughter then extended my break from hunting because my grandpa was sick. I didn't think I would make it out again, but my grandpa only had a 24 hour stomach bug and...
Elk season is always on when you live in elk country, though you may not be hunting them with the intent to fill the freezer, you are always on the hunt to find them!
With that being said my wife has a first rifle elk tag here in Colorado and we both have PLO cow tags that are valid thru...
Hunt update:
Unfortunately I have not been able to make it back out yet and the hunt ends Thursday. I am all packed up and ready to go if the opportunity comes, but my grandpa became ill yesterday and needed my help with the ranch.
I also have two buddies that have archery elk tags in our home...
Day 3 Recap:
This morning was an early riser for me, up and at it by 5:00am as today regardless if I get an antelope or not I am heading home for the weekend for a family affair. The game plan for today is to hunt the public land where I've seen the most critters over the last two days. I'm...
Day two recap:
Given all the moisture today I spent more time glassing from the comfort of a truck than putting boots to the ground. Glassing was less productive today than it was yesterday as the rain and fog persisted throughout the day.
The only stalks I made were in the morning...
