I have a Ruger Model 77 in .22 WinMag that has a robust barrel which (I believe) is 22 inches long; this rifle weighs 9.5 pounds with scope and feels very much like my Ruger Model 77 .338 Winchester Magnum that has a 24 inch barrel.
317 rounds of once-fired brass for .338 Winchester Magnum. 160 rounds Federal Premium, 117 rounds Remington, 40 rounds Swift Bonded. $110 plus shipping.
As the grizzy population has grown so much in Unit 20, I haven't seen many black bears in several years, but we do see grizzlies nearly every year. A black bear's dark fur coat is pretty easy to see, and as Alaska Hunter mentioned, they are typically feeding on berries on sides of ridges - a...
Reading what you already have in terms of gear, I wouldn't buy anything - all of that gear will work well on an August hunt in the 40 Mile country. You don't need a spotter for caribou, if they're that far away try to get closer in the side by side and glass them. 8x42 will work fine.
I would...
Yea, I have a storage unit in Anchorage, keep all my AK hunting gear there except my rifle, trekking poles, and a couple of other items.
Transporter costs can vary widely based on what unit you're hunting, how far they have to fly, and other factors. If you shoot me a PM I would be glad to...
Thanks Ivan. In all of the years I have flown with 40 Mile, I have only been to the same spot once! This year we tried a ridge that they hadn't used before 2019. Plenty of country still left to see, without being in the same spot. And my sisters in Anchorage like caribou more than moose, so...
Glad to help out, and glad you guys had a great trip! Wish you would have seen a couple of grizzlies, but we didn't either. Saw a black wolf and a grey one, but no griz except for the flight in.
Awesome...I hunted near the Salcha River in 2010, with a guy from Idaho that I met on this forum! He shot what is still the caribou with the nicest antlers I have seen taken in the 40 Mile country.
You are correct - except for my rifle, trekking poles, and knives, I leave everything else in a storage unit in Anchorage. One of the best investments I ever made, makes the logistics around my trips so much easier.
In late August/early September, I was back in Alaska for another remote flyout caribou hunt. I opted to go again with the bush pilots I’ve been flying with since the mid-2000’s – 40 Mile Air out of Tok, Alaska. They’re really good pilots, run a safe and organized operation, and fly into some...
Might help if you provided a few preliminary details -
- Where are you hunting (what part of the state)
- When is your hunt scheduled - what dates
- Are you flying in, floating, or hunting the Haul Road
- What type of weapon (rifle/bow/muzzleloader)
- Have you or your partner done remote hunts...
Great story and pics, thanks for sharing and congrats on a great hunt! Wish I had a second degree of kindred who hunted, could have probably taken a couple of nice grizzly bears over the past few years.
Sorry for those out of work, prayers that saner heads (if there are any) prevail soon and the shutdown ends.
Things like this do amplify the sad fact that most Americans live too close to the edge. I did too, in my 20s...but wisened up and tried to take a less risky financial path long ago...
