In my opinion it depends on the kid and the circumstances they were raised in. I'm an old fart and was raised in a different time, but here's how it was for me...
Born in Alaska, Dad a lifelong outdoorsman and Mom a full blooded Inupiat Eskimo. Alaska was a big unsettled wilderness in the...
This year we flew in on August 30 and flew back to Tok on Sep 6 I think. All of my caribou hunts in that area were end of August fly-ins, hunt for 6 days or so, return to Tok around Sep 6 or 7.
To add to my earlier comments on wood, and to follow up on what Bambistew said - we never brought a...
I haven't hunted with Tok Air Service, but have hunted caribou many times with 40 Mile Air, so I was hunting the same country that you will be. Responses to your specific questions below...
Seek Redcliff and stove for 3 people, plus a gear tent, is the stove worth it? is there plenty of wood...
Great bull and great story, well told! One question -
You mentioned during your mental break that you and your wife went to a couple Phillies playoff games. If you're in Montana, where did you go to see those?
Man, what a great story! Kudos to Dad on transferring a once in a lifetime tag, and kudos to your daughter for sticking with it through the slow days, and being prepared for the shot opportunity when it presented itself!
I've had a .338 WinMag (Ruger Model 77, 3 position safety) for nearly 20 years; it was my Alaska hunting rifle. I loved hunting with that rifle, it probably fits me better than any other rifle I have owned. I like shooting 225 grain or 250 grain Swift A Frames out of it; this year I tried some...
Can't go wrong with 40 Mile Air, the challenge there is that they typically get fully booked with repeat customers. I would call them and check the date and time when new customers can try to book a reservation (it's typically sometime in mid-December). On the day/time they give you, I would...
I only had one goal for this season - to find a way to motivate my buddy to properly prepare himself, and his son, for our flyout Alaska caribou hunt this past September.
He's been to Ak with me 4 times previously, so I shoulda known better...but I figured taking his son for a...
Yea, I hunted the Mulchatna herd in 2002 and 2004, the decline was evident in both of those years. On a 10 day moose/caribou hunt in 2004, we saw about 1600 caribou in 10 days, but saw less than 20 shooter bulls among that 1600.
I love hunting caribou more than any other animal! All of the pictures below are hunting in the 40 Mile country, flying out of Tok. I shot some caribou in the early 2000s flying out of Dillingham and Iliamna, but would have to dig up those photos in a box somewhere...
2010 Bull. The guy I...
I tried some Pendleton ammo for the first time this year on my AK caribou hunt, when I was having trouble finding the ammo I like (225 grain Swift A Frame for my .338 WinMag). I don't have a fancy rifle, it's a Ruger M77 stainless synthetic with a Leupold 2.5x-8x on top.
They asked me some...
