Not sure what unit you’ll be in but I’ve spent a little time in 27. I think your awareness about water is good. We couldn’t find any up high. That country is steep! Any weight you can shed without it endangering you or your hunt you’ll thank yourself for later.
I have a love hate relationship with grouse or at least ruffed. I love hunting and eating them but hate how many near times they almost sent me into cardiac arrest flushing right up under my feet or by my face.
Hey Kirby, congrats on the tag! I know only a little of that unit but live pretty close to it and might know a couple areas to check out. I'll text more info to you phone to hopefully get you pointed in the right direction.

Unfortunately I can’t seem to draw by me
:( I did have a bull moose 10 yards behind me while duck hunting last year. Thought it was a really loud DNR officer until he started making that glucking sound.
Thanks for the advice everyone about hoodoo, I might have to try a different way in, I’d...
I’m from Idaho falls so it’s a bit of a drive but I plan on making at least two trips up there. I went up this weekend but couldn’t get over hoodoo pass with the snow yet. I’ll be heading back up for the 4th though. It’s beautiful country for sure!
I grew up on the 300 savage which if I remember right, contributed to the 308. Great all around round, I feel like it gets forgotten over the newer cartridges sometimes.
Those units can be tough hunts, really rugged but there are animals in there, just have to put in the miles. Also manage expectations before going. Would any buck be a trouphy or would you rather hold out for a rare bigger buck and chance going home empty and still feel happy? Neither is wrong...
I’ve hunted a little north of you but have had good luck the first two weeks of November, even called in a muley buck to 5 yards with a bleat call. Came in behind me and both of us got a scare. White tails will be rutting the same time.
