You've got to be kidding. Who ever suggested this unit is under recognized?
Units 511, 59, and 581 sit a 20-30 minute drive from a population of over 800,000+ people. Traffic jams every weekend on the highways and miles & miles of crowded ATV & SxS trails. OTC elk hunting in all 3 units too...
Every unit in Colorado is creeping to the point where our youth isn't hunting because they don't want to wait 5 freakin' years to hunt! This includes a father and son or daughter hoping to hunt together in units 511, 59, 581, and nearly all other units across the state. Everything being shared...
IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER! DOW changed the season dates. 3rd rifle now covers much of the time that used to be 4th rifle season in 511. The deer still rut based on the amount of daylight and not the date. We've been viewing many more bucks chasing does during 3rd season than previously. Especially...
Same deer have been here for the last 35 years. Just like almost every unit in Colorado. The problem today is too many hunters watch YouTube videos and get discouraged because they didn't see or walk up on record bucks/bulls or even mature animals after "being in the woods all day". Not trying...
How many points will you have for the 2024 draw? 511 had 35 buck tags in 2023 for 4th season and 75 tags covering units 59/511 for 3rd season. You would need a minimum of 3 points for 4th season and 2 points for 3rd season and up to draw.
I live in and have been hunting this unit for 35 years...
Please send me their sizes for pants, jacket, etc. Every year I buy up kids camo from our local stores when they drastically reduce it. I'll check my bins and you can have whatever I still have for free. I buy this stuff and then give it away to our local families for their kids. We live in a...
What usually happens is the pressure stays relatively the same in all Colorado OTC units. What changes are the hunters. Those with experience know their unit. They know how the elk react to the increased activities of more September hikers, bikers, archers, and muzzleloaders. These highly...
Another heads up. Some areas in 22 have no cell service. So make sure you download the onX map to your phone for offline use. We did this and it works great!
Hey Glen, all I need is your email address or cell number. I can embed links into an email which you then click and accept. This will then add any way points I send to your onX app. You can then sync to a PC, tablet, and cell phone. Texting you links works roughly the same.
There was no shortage of 4x4 bucks seen during the 4th season. Our group easily saw over 100 bucks. During a previous decade 180-200 inch bucks were "relatively" common during 3rd & 4th seasons. This is what began the massive point creep. Now, with few exceptions in Colorado, the number of...
Great point! I almost forgot. Bring snow chains!!! As much for the possible mud as for any snow that might appear! So glad we got that hint before arriving 4th season. It was bone dry in September. There is virtually no open water anywhere except near the private ranches. Miles of BLM land and...
We took a good friend and her son to unit 22 just two years ago. She burned 16 points. She and her husband had both applied 16 years previously before finding out she was pregnant with their son. Unfortunately her husband passed away before ever getting enough points to hunt unit 22. So, we took...
While your points are all well made and a lot of thought went into this post, it's a completely moot point. Your second paragraph above isn't reality regarding the second amendment and gun ownership. It hasn't been for over 50 years. Right up there with amnesty & illegal aliens. Neither party...
Private land is very common in all Colorado units. Especially those that hold a good population of elk. These elk have learned to take advantage of the private land due to the water that is usually located on these private land tracts.
I have access to both public and private land. During all...
Just remember a very true phrase regarding elk hunting. "Elk are where you find them". Plan on covering ground. Lots of ground. Move fast to find fresh sign then slow down. You'll never out walk or out run an elk. If you do cross fresh sign try to determine the direction they are heading. Then...
